My niece is going to Olympic trials

I got an email with a link to some great news.
My brother told me yesterday but it's cool to see in print.

Friday News from Gun Owners' Action League

scroll down about halfway to the part about Sonya May

it's in a GOAL newsletter

She has really worked hard at this and I am very proud of her too.

Cool, congratulations and good wishes on obtaining her dreams.

TheSpecialist 11-26-2011 12:18 PM

Congrats Slip, it's great to see young people, especially women, interested in the shooting sports.

Slipknot 11-26-2011 04:28 PM

thanks everyone
She did really well in Ohio and my brother had sent me a link where I could actually watch her score live, they posted the targets online as she shot at them, it was all electronic, I was home that day and watched at lunchtime. Her team has some very talented shooters on it. I think their coach is one of the best in the country.

I'll let you know how she makes out next week

PaulS 11-27-2011 06:28 PM

Bruce, that is great. Keep us updated.

GattaFish 11-27-2011 07:57 PM

That sounds pretty cool.... Wish her luck

Rockport24 11-28-2011 11:05 AM

Pretty awesome! Best of luck to her!

vineyardblues 11-28-2011 04:42 PM

How did I miss this ...lol

I want her on my side :) best of luck

Keep us up to date Slip

Swimmer 11-28-2011 05:30 PM

Way to go. We should start a fan club.

MarshCappa 11-29-2011 12:47 PM

Incredible story!!! Please keep us posted, I love stuff like this. Best of luck to Sonya!

Slipknot 12-07-2011 03:00 PM

I got word that the girls did not make the cut unfortunately. But they at least they got the chance and the experience. Sonya hurt her back and wasn't shooting as well most likely because of it. I'm sure she'll get another chance someday.

Notfishinenuf 12-07-2011 07:14 PM

Congrats to her. This is quite an achievement. Competition at this level is very tough. To make it to the point she is shooting at now takes a lot of commitment and hard work. I hope she keeps it up and makes it next time.

Thanks Vic,

Actually they are still at it again at Camp Perry Ohio, so she still has a shot.

that is a link to their scores, I clicked on Sonya May and saw her scores live. They have some kind of electronic scoring.
I saw her last Kneeling set. Her club is leading right now.

Hopefully she will return to Camp Perry in Feb. for another go at the Olympic trials.

Backbeach Jake 01-13-2012 06:22 PM

At the top of the top. Incredible. And congratulations!!

Slipknot 01-13-2012 08:01 PM

there are 3 of them from their team at the top 1,2 and 3
Sonya is behind second by a couple hundredths in the final.

She ranked second in the overall in Precision group, but after the final she dropped to 3rd

here is her last score in the final
too bad for the 8.3, she could have broke 100 like her 2 teammates

Their team set a new National record score! wow

Notfishinenuf 01-13-2012 10:42 PM

Awesome job. Great performance at the national level. She should be very proud of herself and the team.

Vic

That's very cool!

Some people frown upon that air rifle but the target is much smaller and precision is much harder to achieve. We had Anschutz competition pellet rifles in HS ROTC which were as great as the targets were small.

Slipknot 01-14-2012 10:19 AM

yes John, and the bullseye is the size of a head of a pin maybe smaller.

she is doing well today, currently in 4th place with the other 80 juniors and adults still shooting now.

here are her scores from this morning

She made the finals again Sunday and wound up 6th place junior precision rifle and qualified for the superfinal which is a last man standing competition where they all shoot one shot all at once while others are shouting, and trying to distract them. The lowest score drops out, and so that goes until it gets to one final shooter.

At the end the top 15 juniors and top 15 adults shoot off in the superfinal and this is part of the note my brother sent me

"Sonya and Mackenzie were in the super final. Sonya was the last jr left standing. She even beat some army marksmanship unit guys plus Olympic squad shooters. She finished in 8th place in the super final. She got a huge round of applause. Fantastic weekend for her."

pretty damn good if you ask me, that was her best performance to date.
needless to say we are proud of her and I hope she does that well in Feb.

thanks for your interest :)

bart 01-16-2012 07:41 PM
