Neck lights
 

I am looking to replace my old back up Princeton Tec neck light that I lost. I use a UK Vizion for my primary headlamp while fishing, but need a back up white light for wetsuiting. It needs to be waterproof, as bright as possible, and not break the bank. I am looking at the PT Torrent Xenon dive light as it has some great reviews online and is reasonably priced. Anyone have any experience with this light or have another recommendation?

I use the smaller (4 aaa cell) PT attitude LED light. It has proven durable (I had one fail I think from a bulb issue..they replaced it).
Cheap enough to buy several to keep on hand and light enough to cary a spare in your bag. Seems very waterproof.
It is a pain having to twist on and off when your hands are full.
Great battery life. Once on it is easy to hold in your teeth for long periods (like when walking in).
Very bright. Get a red one to save your eyes from shine back through the plastic. Otherwise tape the area behind the lens cap.

looking for one, or someone to make a head band for a tactical light. I have several that would be awesome

I think the light I had was an older attitude. Decent light, but I wasn't a fan of the twist-on feature to activate the light. The Torrent has a toggle switch instead. Not worried about a red lense as this will just be a safety/spotting light.

Check out the Nebo line. SWE has a few models in stock and can get other models. Haven't used it but the Nebo Quarrow Vista 3 looks nice, is water proof, and won't break the bank. Just google it. I've used a few other Nebos but they are only listed as water resistant.

Fenix makes a nice 100 lumen Cree LED , single AA neck light thats submersible ( IPX-8 ) for about $ 25, at REI. Very bright, 2 settings, low and high, ( by twisting the front ),push button tailcap for on and off.

Actually, I did not mean the lens (for the sake of others), I was talking about the color of the plastic body. There is light leakage backwards through the body. When I got a blue light it wrecked my night vision every time I turned it on. Fixed it with tape, but the red body was better. I agree that a switch would be ideal, the twist on function is difficult when trying to light up a fish.

I picked up a UK Mini Q40 eLED Plus in early October. It is a dive light supposedly waterproof to 500 Feet. I really haven't had a chance to put it through it's paces yet to see how waterproof and dependable it is, but it's taken some splashes and seems to be ok so far. It is very bright. The drawback is the twist on/off function, I would love a push button. I have a feeling UK may make a push button on/off as well. I zip tied a diving regulator mouthpiece onto it so I can bite down on the light and turn on/off and keep my hands relatively free.

I use a princeton tec rage for a neck light after trying many. Totally waterproof, BEYOND bright, and is 11$ at west marine. I can bring mine to a meeting if you want to check it out in person. Only drawback is the "twist-on"... wish it was push button.

The LED penlight available from thesurfcaster is what I have been using. Nice and small, waterproof, and has push button on/off. Not super bright but plenty bright to get around.

Hahah... No kidding. JLH can attest to the brightness of the PT rage... Lit up half way across cutty!

Toby I just picked up a Princeton Tech Quad Tactical head lamp. Jeff the Chef recommended this. I had a $5 discount coupon @ Cabelas so I went for it. It was 30.00. On & off button with varing intensities. Does come with replaceable shades, red, green & blue. With the shade up the white led light is bright. My Rayovac managed to succumb to Snake hole. Took it apart to find the contacts corroded in 1 day. I've used rayovac for 10 years. Loved them. surprise that it leaked through the o-rings on thre battery side cover. Maybe cause it was swimming in the surf for a while. Funny story when it was swimming around I actually found it when I noticed the red lite on but the only thing was that the light wasn't on when it was kindly removed by King Neptune. Thats when I sould of realized the light had shorted out. Oh well. Lets see how the Priceton tech does next year.

I have the Torrent LED. Stayed away from the Xenon because of the battery life. Its a big light. ok for spotting rocks but would be better if it had a focusable beam.

I have gone through at least 6 lights this year... ALL CLAIMED TO BE WATER PROOF...

I burned out a UK Vizion on second one now,.... 3 stream lights.. and 2 princeton tech 3.5 amps.

I have a little light like the rage I use as a back up...

I like the stream lights because of the push buttons. The old one I had lasted years... new ones stink.... then the vizion. not much keeping the water out.... The 3.5 amp push button was terrible.. lasted maybe a couple weeks.

I am not a big fan of anything in my mouth when I swim. not to mention if I want to tie a knot I cant see because my light is down,,,

The PT rage claims waterproof to 100 meters and is described as a "dive" light. I wore 2 on my neck all season while wetsuiting, and they still work perfect.

My PT quad-tactical headlamp has been sent back to be replaced twice so far... its great when it works, but the red filter provided blocks waaay too much light, and thats the only reason I use the green filter.

I have been using the PT rage lights for a couple of seasons now and have had great luck with the lights. Twisting the light on can be a pain, I find if you use a little grease like super lube on the plasitc threads and o-ring it makes it much easier to turn and wont lock up on you. Great little light you can wear around you neck or tuck in your bag and not even notice.

Tom, I am leaning towards the Torrent still. Maybe seeing yours was where I remembered it from. Funny you mention issues with the Vizion headlamp, one of mine crapped out this year. Got back from a night in the suit and the light was full of water. I didn't realize it and puit it away for my next trip. Well, 5 days of salt water soaking into the electronics didn't help the light in any way. Went to my backup the next trip and the case started popping open. It actually fell right off my head on the walk out to the Hill one night. Time to contact the company to see what kind of warrantee they have.
