shad derby

Got some great warming up for striper season at the conneticut river in South Hadley fishing in the Derby today and our boat caught over fifty shad with three fish on every so often in many mini blitz's.
So far the largest adult caught shad weighed in at 6 pounds 12 ounces. The largest junoir fish as of 3:oo pm was 5lbs 2 ounces.
Talk about -> fun in the sun :rotf3:

Hey Raven -what do you use to catch shad on regular tackle???
I just fly fish for them on the Merrimac and we use small bright flies. An aquintance of mine loves fishing the connecticut river. There seems to be far more fish there then inthe Merrimac river

Fly rod
you get shad darts they're like minature poppers 1 inch or so long
with a shinny tail feather and we hit them best with the blue/ pink combo and or purple/ pink combo . It was great having to five pound shad on simutaneously one rod in each hand as we were ocassionally slammed with"fish on".

Save those shad you get as bait for the Stripers. The chunks have a tough consistancy so they stay on the hook forever. Plus, so many people throw dead shad back that the Stripers get accustomed to feeding on it. I personally like to use plugs. But every so often I like to chunk. The shad is the way to go around Holyoke. I know some Striper hot spots around here. Let me know.
