Tuna sells for $1244 per pound

Today a Blue Fin Tuna sold for $1244 a pound in Japan. It was purchased by a sushi restaurant owner. Over $735K for the whole fish.

If the fish is $1244 a pound , I wonder how much a dinner made from this fish costs?

All a publicity stunt.

They are charging $5 a piece.

Saltheart 01-05-2012 03:00 PM

Must be a very tiny piece for $5! :)

The owner owns a whole string of upscale Sushi Restaurants. I understanding instead of Doritos buying a 30 second Super Bowl Ad for $1,000,000 --the price for the first Giant Bluefin of the auctions season is the equivalent because of the advertising value. Then they sell each of the 10,000 pieces from the fish which was 592 pounds cheap as more advertising. So its probably a very good business decision.

Just watched the documentry The end of the line. Japanese are biggest reason for the demise of the bluefin and many other species. They are the rapists of the oceans in my opinion. Screw that restaurant owner and the people who buy his overpriced sushi.

actually it's about honor an the old Bushido code. a couple of the rich old guys bid for the ist fish of the year as a matter of honor as to who wins the fish. got nothing to do with supply or demand. lucky being the seller at the auction.

Well, if they insist on practicing their ancient Bushido Code, then letting them measure their manhood and honor by bidding up a bluefin tuna is probably one of the better methods of doing so.
This way we won't have to put them under a mushroom cloud to get them to set their clocks straight, and the only one who get his head chopped off is a fish.
