Corrosion on van stall spool
 

Was just stripping the line off my VS200 and noticed corrosion above the drag clicker mount where the braid lays down on spool. Anyone else ever see this? Will they replace the spool or am I out 200 bucks for a new one. I have serviced it every year since I bought it except last year cause I barely fished the year before and only got out about 10 times last year after having a baby. Always rinsed after using. Any info appreciated.

Why do you need a new spool? The corrosion certainly does not affect the ability of the spool to work.

The reason there is corosion is because of salt water left under the line.If it's pitted to where it's going to nip at the line you need to change the spool.They are not going to replacd the spool caus of salt corosion.

its normal. happens on all of mine. no issue.

It is pitted to where I think it could be an issue with it nicking the braid. It seems to have started with the mount and spread up through the spool. So i guess I'm out 200 bucks. That sucks! Have no problem with the mount corroding but I thought the spool and body were corrosion proof. Maybe for my next reel I go with the Zeebass. Thanks for the info!

Sometimes you get these pockets of salty water under your line that wont come out no matter what you do.Stripping all the line off after the season's end is what i do.Been there with a different reel.I use real magic or wd40 after each outing after spraying everything down with the hose.

I would have requested for a free spool before having posted. Let they know it is their best interest for they are not the only game in town and you will post this problem for everyone to see.

Gonna call them today. I'm not trying to bad mouth them, just wondering if anyone else ever had this happen. Love my reel and it has provided me with years of reliable use. As for a picture, I'm pretty much computer illiterate and don't know how but will see if my girlfriend can later this afternoon. Trust me though, it pretty much spread like a cancer from the drag clicker mount through the spool. I would not even be concerned if it were minor. Thanks for all the replies

I've never heard of this problem. Personally this issue sounds like neglect. Taking a couple minutes to wash off your gear will save a lot of hassle and $.

File down the rough spot with fine file and a little scotch brite and use. Happens on hard coat all the time.

We used to use Coke an aluminum foil to clean carosion off aluminum bike rims. Worked great and the cleaning didn't leave any rough spots. Read it in an old popular mechanics mag yrs ago.

Which scotch brite product ?

They make all kinds of grit. Comes in 6x8. You will have to file down the high spots as it is not aggressive enough to do that. More of the next step in the process

Ended up calling van stall and they told me to call an rivers end tackle. Not sure who i talked to but he said it was caused by electrolisis(spelling) from the steel screw and aluminum spool. Told me to send it in for the service and they would look at it and then talk to van stall to see what they can do. He was definitely helpful and courteous. Let you know how I make out. Thanks for all the suggestions but I think the corrosion is much to severe for sanding and as for neglect like I said I rinsed it after each use which was minimal due to having a baby.

always had that problem with the alum spools on Penn Jigmasters. That is why I bought every stainless spool for them I ever found. You also run into that problem with wire line on the 113 spools, chrome over brass spools. It is very common. You should see some of the hard coat anodized stuff we get back at work that has been in the ocean for a long period. Ugly. Good luck.

So everyone with a VS should pull that steel screw and grease the hell out of it and the surrounding area.Maybe add it to the list of maintenance.

Are you saying that it was a steel screw not stainless?

Dissimilar metals like stainless steel and aluminum can cause electrolysis when exposed to saltwater environment

Drag clickers suck anyways

The easiest thing to do is remove the screw, no dissimilar metals, no electrons moving. Might want to plug the hole with epoxy as it was possibly bored and tapped after being anodized and if so would be bare metal.

I had an american made that the screw fell out due to electrolysis.

most of the really fished VSs I've seen have this problem, the clicker fails on china and US reels.

some guys drill out the other side of the spool and put the clicker over there.
