Baits for herring

What baits should I use on a sabaki rig for herrings? seaworms, squids, clam strips, or frozen shrimp strips?

fishsmith 05-16-2003 02:10 PM

I use them as is for mackeral, I've only caught herring on a hook by accident. But I suppose a bit of any baits you mentioned couldn't hurt.

Notaro 05-16-2003 02:12 PM

:laughs: HAHAHAHAHA. will squids or clam strips do the work?

GMAN 05-16-2003 02:14 PM

YOU DON'T NEED ANY BAIT ON THE HOOKS JUST USE IT AS IT IS.
BUT JUST JIG IT SLOWLY. THAT HOW I GET MOST OF MY HERRINGS.

the sabiki rig is the bait...just fish it as is...

Notaro 05-16-2003 05:36 PM

damn, then i must have wasted my money on buying a bag of powerbait plastic sandworm imitations. alright, thanks, guy.

I get herring with a piece of plywood and a net-backet rig

Notaro---the herring that people catch on Sabiki rigs are true sea, or "Atlantic" herring, not the alewifes or bluebacks that are entering freash water runs to spawn right now.

I use M80's

GBOUTDOORS 05-17-2003 06:07 AM

Ahh Squid you beat me to it a m80 and a dip net always worked well for herring and pogies

TheSpecialist 05-17-2003 06:12 AM

Actually they are getting Alewives, and Bluebacks with Sabiki rigs if you know where to go...
