Here's a real survival "FAIL" in the makings....
Missing hiker found after being lost for almost a month in the Gila National Forest.
Oh, and she brought her cat with her too!! The rescue team found her in her sleeping bag with her cat by her side. She was malnourished and emaciated but well hydrated. Apparently she brought more food for the cat than for herself, depending on how long her trip was intended to take. The first thing I thought of when I saw this story was "I wonder what cat taste like?" This woman was pretty much willing to starve to death but still kept feeding her cat. Here's 2 things to consider that make me question whether I'd let this woman go anywhere by herself anymore: 1) Surely she was starving, so why wasn't she eating the catfood? 2) Unless the cat has been declawed (cruelty to cats), the cat could have easily fended for itself and fed on rodents, small birds or insects. I hope she learnt a valuable lesson, and the cat stays home next time!!!!! |
I would have ate the cat food and then the cat. There is a chance I'd have done the opposite also.

Her starving to death, by not eating her cat would have strengthened our gene pool . This is how stupidity is naturally eliminated by nature. We just keep rescuing these people. Now she's free to raise some dumb arse kids . We'll be rescuing them someday ..

If you've ever owned a cat you know they like to go out and kill things ,, I've had all kinds of rodents and even a rabbit once brought back to my door step with the cat sitting proudly with it's kill .. This could have been a win win . let the cat fend for itself .

I wonder what it taste like to eat some cat? I would probably lick it first to make sure it was fresh.

I'd eat the cat then the catfood, assuming I had a way to make a fire. At least I'd know what I was eating when I ate the cat. That catfood - I'm not sure I want to know the sources of protein in that... although I guess properly cooked I wouldn't be as frightened of it.
There are some great cats out there (mostly because they are friendly and behave like dogs) but most of them kind of rub me the wrong way. Peeing on things, scratching up cars and other valuables, leaving hairballs on the carpet, crapping in your shoes, taking a bite or swipe at you just for feeding it. Yeah. That's quite the pet. I'd probably try a cooked cat just out of spite and I wouldn't have to be particularly hungry or in a survival situation to do so. |
In the article they said the woman does not have a full deck. A mental illness will prevent proper preparation for a scenario such as this. They also botched the rescue by towing her car before dogs could use her scent to trace her. Very unfortunate, but a happy ending for her and her family.

I had a cat that would have kept me fed for a year. She could find and kill a variety of things that would easily have kept a person (and her) nourished indefinitely. She was big on mice and snakes. Could catch several each day in a very limited area. She would proudly bring it all back to the door and shared 75% of it with the dog (who would eat garbage if put in front of it). Not filet mignon but it would keep you alive. Would be absolutely stupid to eat a cat that could hunt for you. Like killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
