Why? What will the next (or can this) president do to directly reduce costs of gas/diesel at the pump?

For the record. these prices suck. But when it was 3.50 under Bush all we heard was the president didn't have any control over the price of gas!

striperman36 03-14-2012 09:57 PM

boating is going to be interesting with these fuel prices. Almost glad I didn't upgrade to the 23 footer

That's because Bush never got blamed for anything:rotf2:

Talking point to media..."What can the President do about gas prices? Not much"

I for one won't be doing the 100 gallon trips down past the golf balls this year to chase June tuna. Nor Wildcat cod trips.

The problem here is there really is only one supplier, and can charge what he wants. He as been sued several times but he wins each time. (you cannot prove any collusion among stations...but it goes on, they are all the same.) As to diesel, We now have a choice...there is a guy now who is competing with local supplier. He has a number of trucks. (no big storage facility) He brings high quality diesel fuel from Boston. The marine stuff is excellent fuel. Much better than the bottom of the the barge discount sludge the local guy sells here. (at top dollar) (Dozens of stories about guys who bought fuel here and had major problems)
You can see it in your filters...my filters last all season now and look great. I use to change them every 50 hours!
I generally get it right from the truck right to my boat. I meet the truck at a certain spot. He texts me where he is going to be and I meet him. He has all the fisherman on his phone and he shotguns a text to all of them. It works great, he is normally within a penny of falmouth fuel. Which is .80-1.30 less than the local guy. (In the beginning he was even cheaper than that and delivered right to your slip but the town stopped that and now he maintains cost with the mainland.) If you are worried about the shark tourny...look for the fuel truck parked down by the opening to OB harbor at 5:00 or so, you will see the boats start lining up. That is the fuel you want...or go to Falmouth. That is what I recommend for now. I think next year there could be a new stationary fueling option in OB, serving up quality gas and marine diesel. We are working on it.

Also, the MV commission are a bunch of environmental whaco's and actually do not want you to burn gas or fuel. They want higher prices to discourage you. They will come right out and tell you this. So they do nothing. People have proposed opening new gas stations that provided inexpensive fuel (using other providers) and they deny the permit as it will cause "traffic jams" and hardship against existing stations. REALLY!!

blaruffa 03-15-2012 07:41 AM

I agree at these prices they are expecting this year, I am actually trying to get a slip so I can still enjoy the boat, some what. Or I am going to get a big tarp and a mast and turn her into a sailboat :D

Using the "can't wait for November" logic we need to update the Constitution and get Clinton back in there ASAP. I want some $1.00 gas.

Seriously though, graphs over time are interesting to look at. Not particularly helpful in assigning blame or exempting any president if that's the goal. If you wanted to make a leap of blaming some one - both Obama and Bush are on the hook because they are/were the MIC while prices have gone up.

Cliff's Notes for the ADD crowd - Adjusted for inflation, gas prices have steadily declined since the 1920's (not counting occasional spikes). Since the turn of the century, they have steadily marched upwards, even adjusted for inflation. 2 presidents and almost 3 terms of office haven't really changed that.

Solutions as it relates to fishing? Hope your local fishery stays hot and/or learn it well so you don't have to travel as far...

Good post. Thanks for the links. With the obvious political motivation behind its creation, this entire thread belongs in the caves of the Political Section.

Your ears must have been plugged because all I heard was that Bush was an oil baron, Halliburton and Cheney were profiting from the high gas prices, we invaded Iraq to steal their oil........

for the record, I made a point to note the gas price when O took office, I was paying $1.75

I heard the same thing.
The problem is, the folks defending Bush, are now the same ones blaming Obama. You can't have it both ways....

I was pissed at Bush too. Now if in 5 months you want to compare O to GWB then we can.

jasonsnova 03-15-2012 12:29 PM

as much as i'm not a obama fan its not him, its the traders on wallstreet lining there pockets, speculation. thats it. right now demand is down, oil reserves up , and we still have high prices because of all the crap in the middle east. traders use it as a excuse and speculate a problem driveing up crude prices. And for the record most traders trading energy love the high prices.
my brother works for a high end firm in nyc.....i constantly bitch to him about it.

buckman 03-15-2012 01:37 PM

If you think the President has nothing to do with gas prices wait to you see it drop as November nears. Happened last time and will happen again. If Obama gets in we will top $5.00.

chathamblue30 03-15-2012 02:24 PM

Watching the futures market on gas, todays price is roughly 3.28 a gallon with state taxes, shipping and gas station profits there is usually a 60-80 cent addition to the futures price. Gas prices right now should be around 3.90-4.00 a gallon. Might not be a bad idea to fuel up and save a few bucks, got gas in Lakeville today at 3.69 a gallon Lets hope the lower price currently is reflecting weak demand at the pump and drives the price of fuel down for the season.

BigBo 03-15-2012 04:38 PM

At the rate the gov't is printing money, they'll never be able to drive the prices down. It's pushing the inflation rate so high on everything including gasoline. It's only going to get worse.

chathamblue30 03-15-2012 05:18 PM

Big bo is the smart one with a small center console that gets great gas !!! Smart man :)

Not to drag poiitics into it, but Obama has said he wants to see gas prices here the same as they are in Europe, i.e. $10 a gallon or more.

Sea Dangles 03-15-2012 06:49 PM
