bluefish leaders
when they are cutting plugs off
what is the preferred length for metal leaders standard 10 inch or even longer? |
Leaders don't have to be that long
Personally, considering the plug length is usually six inches or longer that the bluefish hooked onto I make my leaders only about six inches long. That gives you twelve inches of protection before any teeth get near your line. One has to remember that keeping ones line very taught at all times is of parmount importance as well. I make some of mine only about four inches. That may be tempting faith to some people, but I don't get cut off.

that's what i've always used
but didn't know if some of you guys used even longer ones Hence the Question. Thanks Swimmer |
I find that I rarely get chewed off with 60-80 lb mono (which most of my leaders are, for the rocks). But when I'm specifically targeting blues, I generally use 18" prepackaged leaders. I haven't noticed any difference in catch rate, and I've had cutoffs when using the 8" or 12" ones. YMMV!

Lots of times it isn't even the fish you have hooked that gets your line. Stupid things:smash:

Can't tell you how many times it's the buddy fish trying to steal the presumed meal hanging out of the hooked fish's mouth. Rat bastards! Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
Don't cast into the middle of the yellow eyed devils, you will lose less plugs on the edges
|
I use 50# or 60# mono leader and rarley get bit off.

if I'm chunking specificly for blues I use toilet chain and 12/0 long shank shark hooks. They don't mind

i fish 90%surf . love to c+r the large guys. i use 36"+ home made 60# wire leaders. haven't lost a plug in a very long time. i use plugs for blues that have a short shank 5/0 hook with the barb removed. i remove the front treble hook.
