TRAILER TITLE ?
for mass:
is there a weight required (like 2 tons) for the trailer before a title is required ...or does taxachusetts require a title for every trailer? regardless of the weight.... just looked at a trailer but they have no title :smash: so i think it's illegal for them to sell it and the buyer (without a title) would be screwed. |
A friend of mine was on the Mass Pike bringing home his 42' off shore racer from the paint shop. He was pulled over and didn't have a title for the trailer. They took the boat and trailer....towed...confiscated....gone!!! 3 weeks to get it back, and had to pay for the tow and storage fees. Very expansive day.

You have to register/put plates on a trailer. When I bought mine new the title was taken by the registry and said that future sales did not require a title. Trailer valued @$1500.
You are not required to carry titles with you while on the road for either cars, boats or trailers! |
i called the guy back and he said NOPE no Title
so that pretty much ended that sale |
Under 3000# does not require a title. Everything over does.
All you really need is a previous registration or if new, a certificate of origin. https://secure.rmv.state.ma.us/Polic...2Ftrailers.htm |
Tiny trailer I have BigBo....300-400 pound weight limit....I have a title!

Even on the outside chance that you do have a title, it's not required in order to sell the trailer or for the new (purchaser) owner to get a title with the sale in order to register the trailer. Unless it's 3000# or more. This is all fact and can be verified through the RMV. |
Interesting BigBo
i read a post from a guy in OHIO saying it was 4000# in his state
which is why i asked the question here at S-B since the RMV doesn't answer their phones too quick |
Every state has different laws regarding titling and registration. What I posted is strictly for MA

Back in 2009 I purchased a boat and trailer package used from someone and all I had was a bill of sale. What I ended up doing was telling the registry that the trailer was home made and they just had me pay registration fees. The boat on the other hand had to get titled and they just went by the bill of sale and charged me a title fee.
