What effect does wind direction have on the bite?
 

Do you think this old saying is true?

When the wind is from the east
it blows no good for man nor beast
when the wind is from the west
the fishing is at its very best
when the wind is from the north
the skillful fisherman goes not forth
when the wind is from the south
it blows the bait in the fish's mouth

East Sucks.

To say east wind sucks is BS! You just have to be in the right spot. I have had epic fishing in the middle of noreasters with 50 mph winds. Just like real estate - location,location,location!

saying is wack .. I pay more attention to prevailing winds then wind . Is that a fresh water saying ? Just talking East facing beaches,, I've had my best days on a Week of east wind or when a Nor Easter is just coming in . That first day is killer if you can stand being out there on a east facing beach . If it comes from the east for 2 weeks or more (prevailing winds) don't even bother going down there because you know the weed is coming in heavy. West wind I can cast like a super star. How about a west turn in the wind after a week of east . If your fishing for macks from shore a week of east wind can blow them in pretty good . Just saying I think there is a lot more to it then what direction the wind is blowing that one day . Pay attention to which direction the wind is blowing but also watch prevailing winds . I'm just speaking as a shore fisherman, ,, not boat ,.

tagger pretty much sums it up. all depends on what that wind is doing. pushing bait up on the beach or mung. or beating up clams in the surf. as for boating 15 out of the west, no big deal. 15 out of the east, it's gonna be lumpy. at least in my little boat

Always like the wind in my face no matter where I'm fishing. Seems like the wind blows the bait to your feet an the stripers follow it.

There's fish, But like tagger said Location is everything. Think where the wind is pushing water to a solid surface or across structure. Some of my best days have come with east wind and a strong current :)

referring to te saying, it depends where you are. IN jersey we arent going to be looking for the same winds as they are on the LI south shore. That said I ve caught fish, had some of my best days just by changing location on a wind i didnt like

NE wind at the Canal is my favorite for CERTAIN spots. NE wind is my favorite for CERTAIN spots in Narr. NE wind sucks for CERTAIN spots on the SOCO coast.

As Tagger said. It depends on the location. There is a spot in Narr that I told Nebe about 12 years ago. If there is a NE wind and a high tide at midnight in June there is no place I would rather be. Right Eben?

Talking wind direction is opening a big can of worms... differant locals respond differantly to differant wind directions.. I'm not traveling to fish, so certain winds are my friends.. others are my foe...For me.. the wind direction that allows me to fish where I want to fish a given tide is the best direction... usualy that is a South, or S/W wind... in general I dispise an East wind, in our area, it severly limits where you can fish, the water gets filled with weed and thatch from the marshes.. not that I havn't done well during an easterly..... but under most circumstances East wind = misery...... the exception is when there has been a long standing high hanging around.. that Easterly blow mixes up the water and sometimes can break a "dry" or slow spell... Westerlies are OK, provided they are not clearing after a front... those strong winds just make fishing difficult...especialy on an out going tide..North winds, generaly are tolerable...they are usualy a sign of cooler weather... which in most cases, seem to put fish on the feed..and allow many options on any given tide..
