Auto parts places.

Can't look up bearings by size.
Have no goddamn clue what lapping compound is.

All they know how to do is look up by year/make/model.

What the hell is the use??!

Good point

spence 05-25-2012 05:14 PM

Lapping compound is the white crap which forms on the jowls of large dogs that you don't want to touch.

True story...this winter I was in the AutoZone in Fall Rive. The kid behind the counter commented on how he liked my jacket. I said yea, it's French...

Wow did they give him some crap for that :hihi:

Jacket was by Millet. Great hiking/climbing gear if you can get it at discount.

I would have taken you for a Marmot man.
Maybe Arcteryx.

You only have yourself to blame for that mistake!

NAPA in Middletown......worth the trip over the bridge.

NAPA is a little better, they can actually cross reference Sierra part numbers.

Rule number one is to go to an independently owned autoparts store. Over on my side of the bay, we have south county auto supply.. They helped me order a bunch of bearings for my 108" belt sander and pressed them for me.

Hard to find around these parts although there's a Carquest (independently owned, weird hours, shocker) in the "friendly" part of NB that can order just about anything.

3 blocks from that cop stabbing the other day. :hihi:

If you wear a Millet, someone should be doing your Autozone shopping for you.

It's just an adventure brand similar to Marmot or Columbia but a bit nicer.

I like it because nobody else wears it.

Nicer than Marmot? Ehhhhhhh

Nothing is nicer than Arcteryx though.
They're pretty much the Henri Lloyd of outdoor gear.

Nebe 05-26-2012 05:23 PM

My grandfather drank some fine scotch with Henry Lloyd many moons ago.... a true gentleman according to my gramps...

I'd put it on par with Arcteryx and below Canada Goose.

insightful

Lapping compound is used in doing valve jobs to seat valves.
You you put a dab on the valve and with a plunger tool you stick the plunger to the valve and spin the tool with the palms of you hands.

Also for lapping prop shafts to properly mate a prop. (Yes, apparently its that hard to make a perfect morse taper)

An older (chain, not napa but been around just as long) auto parts/auto body supply had it.

I think it'd been on the shelf as long as the store had been open. :hihi:
