Notice F/U silversides .?????

The 1st of the week I was watching a school & 8 out of 10 had large, gross sores /// mostly on their top back , but some had them other places .
Now I just came pack & its low tide where their is a current & there were a descent amount of different schools swimming in the currrent ......... same deal .most of them had the sores ...I,ve never seen this on silersides . They seem to be swimming perfectly healthy .

The ones near me in the east bay have the same deal, but all the ones ive seen have been being harassed by baby blues too.

Clammer, did the growths almost look like weeds or algae growing on their backs? I have been seeing this a lot down the cape this year. I haven't seen it before... No idea what it is.

Saw a bunker with red string like parasites hanging off of it here in west haven yesterday. There is a potential for a huge fish kill down our way right now and we just hit July

We have some macs with scars/sores, but I have been assuming they had been attacked by squid....

toaster816 07-03-2012 03:14 PM

I've been seeing it too. I thought they were anchor worms, like you see on bunker. It seems to be on the biggest spearing. Never noticed anything like it on those baitfish before.

chefchris401 07-03-2012 05:03 PM

Like toaster said, if it's stringy things they are anchor worms.

Him and I were on a mullet/bunker blitz in 2010, and most the fish had em.

I did a thread about it with pics.

All the bunker that stay in the providence river are covered in them.

You'll see the fish rubbing itself along the bottom or against rocks, which causes more damage to the fish.

All of the bunker ark bait has been getting and the ones we have been snagging have them. It's been like this for a few years. I have never seen them on silversides though. You must have some kind of recipe for them? Anchor worm burger? Charge $50 bucks and I'm sure People will buy them. Lol

The news just had a story about striped bass with sores ... they showed a picture of a bass that looked like it had been skinned, claiming it was sores across the entire body and the scientists have not been able to figure it out as of yet ...

... they are thinking that it was the result of bacteria down in the Chesapeake and the fish come up here as the bacteria spreads across their body.

It was nasty, hopefully will not be catching any of those anytime soon ... I have caught fish with a sore from time to time, and once caught a fish that looked like it had a growth problem - the head was for a fish considerably longer than the stunted body, it was kind of gross.
