Im not particularly thrilled with the distance I am getting these days with my spinning setup (to be honest, I knew what I was getting when I had my blank wrapped)...

What do those canal guys who are casting 2/3 across the ditch use?

Time for an upgrade... :)

Mojos, Lami's, Century's

Century 1327 or 1328 ,Shimano Stella or Saragossa 10K . Saltiga6000GT is a beast. Slip casts to race point from the RR Bridge, ask him. I have one of each Century if your interested in trying them out, I'm at the ditch enough.

depends on where your throwing.

for the ditch i love my century 1327 and 1328, both 11ft rods. heavy rods, the 1327 is rated 2 to 5, throws anything from 1 to 4.5oz easily, the 1328 is rated 3 to 7, will throw an sp minnow to a fast sinking sebile. There both heavy rods and not something i would want to throw all night, but in the ditch they excel, lots of backbone and winching power.

for surffishing in the wetsuit im using the century 1205 (10ft) and the 1326 (11ft), they have more of parabolic action, weigh nothing and can throw em all night. the 1326 has been my go to all season, throws a 2.5oz pencil around 115 yards. Loves ss darters! i can throw 3/4 oz bucktail to a grs slim surface swimmer.

for reels im using the zeebaas 27, again for the surf, been using em at the ditch cause thats what I own.

I have all four rods if you want to try any of them out. Can meet up somewhere.

before the centuries I loved my lami ISU custom, awesome all around rod, great in the surf and did ok in the canal.

Had a mojo for two weeks, sucked at life, got rid of it asap.

one main factor that keeps getting left out is "your Height"...tall people have more reach or ark to their swing...short people have less ark in their swing. ...give prof and slip the same rod and slip will out cast paul most of the time...slip being tall has the long ark to beable to load the rod where as the paul being closer to the ground can only get 2/3's of the ark..it makes a differents on distance.

I think I have an inch or two on slip... 6'5"

There are less than 10 guys who can throw two-thirds of the way across. Maybe fewer than 5. And two living guys who have thrown all the way across--with 175 gram tournament weights on Zziplex tournament rods.

Believe me, we had a bunch of guys who can chuck it try to deliberately cross lines from opposite sides of the Canal a couple of years ago. Maybe once---and it's a big maybe---they came close to overlapping.

And if you throw any kind of a crosswind into the picture, and crosswinds are a common feature, and you're not even getting close to halfway.

I suppose I could be exaggerating with 2/3... But it still a hell of a lot further than I am casting... I know it doesn't matter - most of my hits are within 30' of shore, but it would be fun to have a big gun if needed

Yeah I'm short. I'd luv some extra yardage once in a while. Good technique helps too, like a golf swing. One thing I will bring up when you are talking the canal breaking tides is over the years 75% of my largest fish have come from within 50' of shore.

I should add no way I'm 2/3 across either. The rods cast well, in the right hands I'm sure the distance could be good.

Better equipment is a poor cure for bad timing. Most of us never get anywhere near the maximum out of the equipment and body we own.

Take your current gear an go to a football feild with a plug with no hooks. If you don't have a tape take a spool of twine an a marker to measure your cast. Use diff colors for diff cast. Make 12 casts an see where they go.Then try a tech change ist.Once you see an improvement take a break an go fishing. Once you see change due to tech then try a line change.There are guys out there using 50 buck rods with a good swing outcasting guys with 800 buck outfits.Then trust yourself and don't try to make more than one change at a time.easier to tell whats broke or needs to be improved.Distance rods are hard to fish all day.Once you've added 30 ft or more in a cast with your current outfit then think of an upgrade.swing is best to work on. Tools can't fix poor style. Ron

There are alot of factors that go into it, footing the wind direction. But for me being 5'8 and about 175 lbs I was coming up short too and added 10 ft Century 1205 and haven't looked back since. Casts SP's, SS Darters, Afterhours Jr blibs and Lefthook Pilgrims a mile with little to no effort at all, paired with a Penn TRQ 5 bailess and 30# Sufix 832. Before that was and still am using a 10 ft Surf and Jetty Lami 1-3 oz. gets great distance with the above plugs as well.

Imho listen to chef and tysdad, i have see that freak let out some serious blasts and hes about your height B, as far as soups his secret is aqua net.

With all do respect good sir, you are when it comes to casting, and it was ment as a compliment, i am not sure why you down play your casting abilities, when you know that i know that you know that i know that you know, that i know right along with everyone else around you and on the other side knows you can lay into a cast.

I will never forget on several occasions you getting yelled @ from the other side.

Brian, you have 4 inches of height over me. You are definitely tall enough to load a rod all the way. My best advice would be to see Big Dave and get a lesson. I don't know what setup you have now, and you are right, I see lots of guys launching pencils halfway out there, but chances are you could do well with what you have. Like was suggested earlier , make one change at a time, consider a different reel, maybe smaller spool, who knows, sometimes the right combination will do it. Not everybody can afford every new rod that comes along. I still use a used lami 1322xra. I changed from my Emblem to my saltiga 4500 on my plugging rod and can send an M&D's pencil halfway out there now with even stronger line( the emblem had 30 lb powerpro and the saltiga has 40 lb powerpro).

Andy, ya I wish I could reach race point, I miss that place too much. Don't pay attention to my casting, I have my reel upsidedown(seriously).:fishin:

That would be cool to learn the right technique for distance casting. And all you guys with Centuries and CTS rods, I'd love to meet up at the Canal and give them a test run. I am getting decent distance with my 1322 and anything in the 2-3oz range. Was casting really lousy the other morning but didn't matter much since the bass were right on the ledge :)

I have no real issue with my current production. I just think there is a little room for improvement. :)

Any advice, tips, or a lesson would be wholeheartedly appreciated though...

BrianS if you can ever meet up with big Dave he has some great and easy tips for maximizing distance and the offer is there for you to fish the century rods too.

not to mention a sweet eeling rod. probably going to sell off my lamis in the offseason. I built the 1205 in the class this winter, it's become my primary rod....wonder if i can change my username.

the 1205 is such a sick rod, the 1326 is even better if you want an 11ft.

I've been using crap stuff since I was 12 years old. I still can cast with the best of um. My favorite rods ever were an 11' Daiwa Elimanator and an old school 11' Ande Tounament rod. Both of em were under 70 bucks. 3 or 4 years ago I bought a 10.6 Legend. It sits in my cellar. Go figure.

3 o'clock to 10 o'clock, smooth stroke with the power added (right arm punch)at 12 o'clock and pull left hand to chest, release is past the tip! Don't over cast and drop is very important, try different length's. Be smooth keeping the rod loaded, don't muscle it!

If you are smart you will rebuild your GSBs with a newer guide system and fish them a bit first.

The canal aside, catching big fish with plugs or eels is a lot more about endurance than casting distance. That is where the GSB's with a light guide setup are very hard to beat. The real issue with GSB's is that most of them out there are built with large heavy guides and suck to fish.
