Team,

Over the years, i have observed this as one of the closest, friendly fishing sites out there. It is only here that i feel comfortable asking for your help. You see, i have a friend..............well call this friend "cod" so he does not know we are talking about him. You see Cod has a problem. Cod is so caught up in catching the fish that hit his plugs, that he will not switch out his treble hooks, for single hooks. Cod also at times stuggles with patience...........

So Cod now owns the massachusetts surfcasting record for most treble hooks thru a hand in a 3 year period.

So if you could, will you help me in trying to persuade "cod" to "just say no to any more treble hooks". tips, suggestions, anything that might save him from driving another vmc thru his hand

nightfighter 07-31-2012 12:04 PM

Yeah, patience is not his strong suit... He usually waits until mid August to impale himself in the hope that he will not be able to work in the OR during the fall run.
That sucks Jeremy....Hope you didn't do any real damage. I'm betting you were alone and still took a pic....

saltyric 07-31-2012 12:15 PM

I am actually starting a photo gallery of his impalements!

Crush the barbs. Stupid simple.

Punch. Your. Barbs.

It's pretty much as simple as that. A single hook with a barb will get stuck in your hand almost as easily (especially if you're using those Owners Cutting Point hooks).

Plus it makes unhooking the fish a breeze.

:rotf2:

maybe i should not try to hold the fish with my mouth while unhook it with my hand...

Makai

your being an enabler by telling him that if he crushed the barbs, he'd be okay. I dont think you understand the depth of this man's issue. He has run a treble hook thru his hand 3 years in a row (actually over a 24 month period). He has a very high I.Q. Good friends dont let people who run a hook the exact same way thru their hands, go near them anymore.

I was thinking we chip in, take his entire Plug collection up to surfland, and have them switch out the trebles for singles.

Jackbass 07-31-2012 12:33 PM

I crush barbs and it does make life easier. Particularly this time of year when I am catching bluefish and trying to release them green so they have a fighting chance of getting back out past the seals.

use this:

seriously, it's light weight, locks on the fish's jaw securely so it's much easier to unhook a fish with trebles flying everywhere. It's called the "fish gripper"

doc 07-31-2012 01:09 PM

matt, what is that thing?

Rockport24 07-31-2012 01:14 PM

You should really get one, it's called "The fish gripper" and it works like a boga by grabbing the fish's jaw, but this costs like $14 at cabelas, really cheap and easy way to get your hands out of the way.

you know I think I have an extra one if you want it....

MAKAI 07-31-2012 03:04 PM

Maybe Doc likes the pain. The nice dull ache of a well buried treble, know it well. Buried a big single in my nose once, right through the nostril. Thank God it was barbless.

ThrowingTimber 07-31-2012 08:19 PM

maybe golf?

BluesHarp 07-31-2012 08:43 PM

Hire a Chummer like they did back in the 1800's at Clubs like Cuttyhunk.

Let him do the dehooking.

zimmy 07-31-2012 11:04 PM

My sons started out with a twister tail tide to the line, no hook. It isn't quite the same fight, but it is safer. Tell Cod to give it a try.

basstrologer 08-01-2012 04:36 PM

siwash hooks in the rear for the for peccils, SS poppers, needles and darters and boga. Should be good to go

dunno why I deleted that, it probably is lol. The initial lipping of the fish takes a fish or two to practice and get down smooth, but once you have them locked in, virtually nothing can go wrong. you have total control of the fish

especially handy for blues on the slippery rocks when you dont wanna do the d!ck dance up to the path with a pissed off yellow eyed devil. (last years photo)

"cod" orders plugs from me a few times a year- i will make a note to crush the barbs on his plugs :).

numbskull 08-02-2012 11:46 AM

If he fished eels this would not happen. Of course the lobotomy he'd need first might hurt a little.

piemma 08-02-2012 11:54 AM

Buried a treble in my finger with a 15# bass hooked to the Siwash on the back once. Middle of the night, waist deep in the water out on the reef at the Fire Beach. Thank God I carry Manley pliers all the time.

Stripersurg 08-02-2012 03:48 PM

Those fish Grippers are great, I own a couple of pair, and I won't go out without them, no worry about driving hooks in my hand using one of these.

gotta go barbless...I can challenge the record for taking hooks...
let's see - sandy neck back of hand(popped through and cut - kept fishing), one in the face(pop and cut thang), one in osterville(could not pop - had to cut and leave a post for the ER to work with 4 hours later - kept fishing - hurt like hell every time I hit it), one in barnstable( had to go to ER for Removal - but back fishing in less than 2 hours)...and...

seriously though...

barbless sure saved me a few times already:uhuh:
