Did anyone see a hot air balloon go down...

last night at dark east of Duxbury Beach?
At about 8:00...
I saw a reddish/yellow glow in the sky. Pulled out the binoculars and it was a hot air balloon. After 30 seconds or so, the flame went out and it plunged straight down into Cape Cod Bay. Reported it to the Harbor Master kids and the Duxbury Police. Haven't seen anything in the news...
Anyone have info?

Are those things against the law? Thought I had heard that as they can be confused as a distress signal on the water....

lots and lots of those things sent off Sandy Neck most nites by the campers

not sure if they are illegal.

my wifey and i sent one off for her dog that we had to put down, she wrote little notes on the balloon and put some ashes in it, was a nice way to send him off.

they go pretty high on a calm night and are supposed to be safe, cause they only land/crash when the fuel is empty.

on a windy day they wont work, the fuel isnt strong enough to withstand high winds without being blown out.

or keep them from getting blown into trees or the neighbors house as they rise

Those things are great as long as you light them with a half a brain. If you have enough room to get them up they are not a problem once up. They wont peacefully fall on top of someones roof.

Hopefully they don't land in woods, dry woods.

Hence their simplicity: no fuel - they fall, they fall - no fire!

I did, about twenty years ago

at the Lakeville Golf Club on a sunday morning playing with the same guys I always played with. You heard it first. Great sounds of rushing air being forced up into a balloon by the gas flame. Only problem was there was a huge rip in the side of the balloon. The sounds of rushing air was actually air was made by air escaping from inside the balloon through the huge rip. It hit some trees on one side of the fairway I was playing in, bounced onto the middle of the fairway if front of me, back up into the air, hitting trees more solidly on the other side of the fairway and crashing down for good one fairway over. A one ton van with a basket for transporting the balloon came racing across the golf course with the course owner in hot pursuit. Guy drove partly onto the putting green and everywhere else he wanted to to get to where the balloon came to a halt. There was quite a battle with the van driver and course owner. We all kept playing. The cops showed up, and squared things away, not before damages to the putting greens were assessed and agreements worked out to pay for those damages. It was the weirdest thing though watching it crash and those six people hanging on for dear life fifty feet away from me. Pilot did a great job, actually heroic, doing what he could to keep it aloft.
