Question: Can you bring gas containers on the ferry?

Without causing a chitstorm I was curious if you can bring gas containers in the Steamship Authority ferrys? I am staying on Chappy for two weeks and I was thinking of trying to actually not have to take the On Time off of Chappy during that time. I see work trucks pulling onto the ferries all the time and they must have plastic gas type tanks with fuel in them for all the equipment they use, or even just for a lawnmower. Just curious and was wondering if anyone here had the answer. Went on the web site and could find nothing. I didn't wnt to call unless I absolutley have to.

If you do keep it out of sight. They used to ok it on the freighter but I'm not sure now. But what they don't see they won't know. Gas grills a great on the beach or a parkin lot. my little coleman gets a lot of use on the island at times.Ron

Thats what I figure as well. Some people must go over and mow lawns and stuff and bring the can from there off-island home to Chappy. Then again, who on Chappy mows there own lawn. I am probably going to call and ask.

In general you are not allowed to carry fuel in containers on the SSA. They have asked me if I had fuel or any kind of explosives in my car. They are suppose to look in your vehicle but I think they only spot check. I would just call them and get the scoop. But I doubt they will let you carry Jerry jugs with gasoline on board.

just bring them empty

why is it such a hassle to drive and use the ontime ferry? isn't it like a 2 minute thing

Just measured it on Google maps, it's 200 yds from dock to dock! Haul off a good cast and have someone attach the can and reel away!!:)

I was hoping you'd see this post Jim. I will call as you suggested. Thank you. I look everywhere on the web site but couldn't locate anything pertaining to this.

What do you need fuel for while you are over there? Probably a well known thing/easy answer, but I can't figure it out

The fare, to buy gas that's priced 50 cents to $1 higher than on the mainland. ;)

Swimmer,
Just so you know, I paid $4.89/gal at the E-town Mobil last weekend for 87. If you can fill em up here and tote them down, you'll be saving ~$1/gal. I was trying like hell not to leave Chappy for gas until my return trip on Sunday, but had to do it a day early.

Scott that is my idea and why I posted the query. Will be calling SSA today to find out. Even if I can't bring them on full. I should be able to bring them on empty.
