Century 1267 Build
 

here is the newest century rod I just finished, i tried taking some pics along the way.

This is the newest rod in the sling shot series, moderate fast action, model is the 1267, 10'6" rated 2 to 5oz.

Blank weighs 8.34oz

Reel seat is 24.5" from butt to reel foot stem

Reel seat is a fuji deluxe size 18, that I cut 1" off the bottom, and sanded smooth. reel seat weighs .81oz

For the butt wrap I did the "paco grip", saw this design at the LI fisherman show on the new lami infinity series, its just cork grip spiraled around the butt with a gap in between the wraps and then shrink grip over it, gives a really nice feel and helps keep the weight down. see pics 1 and 2, that is before the shrink grip over it.

I like my foregrips to be 10 to 12" long, seeing i fish a lot of different plugs and almost never hold my rod at the reel seat. I used a piece of EVA foam from CMS, 11" long and only weighs .70oz where the same amount of cork and shrink weighed 2 oz.

Then instead of a crosswrap i did a green marble pattern, i used testors green, white and silver enamel paints, i put down a thin layer of epoxy and started with white, the silver then green, used a toothpick to swirl them together then a piece of crumbled up saran wrap for the end result. the next day i put one thick coat of epoxy over it, smooth as glass now. see pic 3

up from the marble and below the ferrule i added the "walking stick grip" , also paco style, really helps while deep wading and if needed you can hold the rod in your teeth while climbing up a rock, also helps in separating the rod too. That grip is 7", it doesnt effect casting at all.

I used fuji k frames, all double foot, im not a fan of single foots as they tend to get bend easily at least for me anyway.

sizes are 25,16,12,8,8,8 then tip.

measurements from tip are 5.5",12",21",31.25"44.5" and 60", 25 guide ended up being 39" from reel face

I did metallic green thread wraps on the 25,16 and 12 and all black wraps on the 8s.

Just finished the last coat of epoxy on the guides last night and took these pics this morning.

still need to weigh the finished rod and really test its casting weight range.

Im still building all my rods with a handwrapper, it is slower but its what i have.

So this rod has the marbling just above the reel seat and the foregrip up at the ferrel? Hard to tell the whole layout with the small segment pictures Chris.

saltheart the marbling goes from the end of the eva foregrip to the grip below the ferrule, covers a 14" section of the blank. so in the last pic it goes from where my hand is down to the foam grip

finished weight of the rod is 13.5oz, weighed it today.

Ok I get it now. There is a second (fore) grip just below the ferrel.

i love the 1267. maybe my favorite century so far that i have. same power of my 1327, but the versatility closer to the 11ft s2. threw a 3/4 bucktail, fine (not optimal but it loaded alright), threw a 3 oz pencil awesome, and a big metal lip. cant wait to give it a shot in mtk this week.

Nice job Chris. correct on weight saving with components. I've been weighing parts to get a doable weight for awhile. Cork tape is a hidden factor of as I say" unsprung weight" ( drag racing talk). I too started using the spiral /schrink butt method and marbling. Very effective and easy. This 1267 is the same rod cut 6" as the 1327? I had a couple members asking about the 11" cut. Ryan did mention the 10'6" version would be out. Give me your take on the top end of lure weight once you give it a work out.

Billy not same rod as the 1327 with 6" off the butt, this rod is its own.

I hit the beach today after work to test the weight range.

1.5 to 4.5 oz all day, threw a loaded Redfin good enough for the surf, 3oz ss needle amazing, was smoking left hook pilgrims with it and casted a 3.5oz Afterhours pencil like nothing

Threw a pt 4200 in it (4.4oz with hooks) easily and was still able to work it.

I like better than the 1327 as it loads easier and weighs less and just feels crispier

Thanks Chris. The 1327 i built was nice but thought 3.5 topped out. Redfins casted but lacked feel. Owner loves the rod which byall means is super in it's own but I'm not a fan of a 11' rod. Would you feel it could throw eels OK?

Surprised to say it topped out at 3.5, I've thrown 4.5 on it all the time at the canal.

It lacks feel on redfins that for sure. But they are below it's weight range, the 1267 has a better feel for the lighter stuff.

I'm not sure how it would throw eels, think it might be too fast action, but I was throwing big 5oz eels on the 1327 so should be alright. Will have to try it.

If I'm throwing eels I'm using the stealth, such a great eeling rod.

I have a 1327 which was cut 6" off the butt... curious to see how similar or different they are... I cant imagine the 1267 has a thinner tip/taper, since the 1327 is pretty darn light near the tip... I thought they are the same blank just different lengths?

The 1327 ? I throw eels in the surf and the canal with it and it's very nice. My son won't let me take his 1327 thats cut 6" from the butt to try...little bastard.

Sorry dude, but his rod is for "Pro Staff" only! Put your time in and one day you may be worthy :biglaugh:

One "Pro Stiff" in my house is enough...the boy gets all the stuff.

both are manufactured to be their own rod.

The 10'6" is lighter and throws and feels the lighter stuff better than the 1327.

The 1327 is a great rod, but doesnt handle the lighter stuff that well, loves 2.5 to 3.5oz and has big set of balls for a light rod, i use mainly in the canal for plugging and lighter jigging.

I was throwing a 1oz bucktail to big blues this am on the 1267, was tossing them great, especially for being an oz under the rating.

This could be a "one and done" rod for the surf and canal usage, I know Big Dave has been fishing a lot in the ditch and really liking it.

I get nervous when landing bigger fish with the 1327 due to the light thin tip... right or wrong, i dont pass the rod back when landing a fish, i like to keep holding on to the reel seat the entire time, and lust lean back hard to bring the leader within reach (am i high-sticking?) I do this all the time with my lami 1205 with no worries at all, and it has lots of power to do this, but the way my 1327 feels when doing this makes me nervous... maybe without reason, but I still get nervous with how it feels... ive lost a couple nice fish by "babying" the rod and talking too long to grab the fish when at my feet... with the 1205, i just lean back and horse that fish right to me.


1327 casts eels and redfins just fine, but doesnt load that well with redfins.

I've dragged some nice fish out of canal and surf with the 1327 , put the boots to it you wont be let down.

Chris #8 runners u like? Think there may be issues with junk plugging up the hole? I haven't built a full surf rod w/ smaller runners than 10 and 12 tip. What u using for tip #8 or #10?

I use 8s on most my builds. I like em except for having to restring the rod on the middle of a rock in the dark.

I haven't had an issue with them getting fouled, as most the mung will catch the swivel

I usually use a 8 tip, but some have 10, I don't think it makes a difference

Thanks Chris. I used 8's on schoolie rods and they are a PITA to restring in the dark especially since I can't see BOO w/ glasses!!
