Ankle sprains suck
 
Not a major sprain. Rolls over outside just enough to keep from healing. Black and blue, but not much swelling. Been up on two roofs since Christmas, but will probably need to shut it down to get it healed up. PITA. Any thoughts on managing through this better? Don't even know when I did it originally....

Unfortunately, shutting it down is the only option. They take a long time to heal.

My wife is dealing with one she has had since Oct. She is a greenskeeper at a local course and twisted it in a gopher hole. This was the 2nd week in Oct. She wears a brace but it still hurts.

The upside is she has a script for codeine which she hides from me cause with all my old injuries I'd take 6 at a time.

I swear by epsom salts for sprained ankles, fill a bucket with the hotest water you can stand, add epsom salts. Sit and relax.... When the water gets cold repeat the process.

Boot it, and hot whirlpools. If you tweak it you will need to ice it for 48, then back to heat.

I rolled my ankle stepping off a curb onto cobbles while holding my son a week ago. Thankfully I just caught it but I thought I was toast.

Epsom salts are good for inflammation. Just make sure you drink some water and don't over do it. A few times a day is enough. And ibuprofen obviously...

The doc told me I should have surgery on my right ankle because it is so messed up. He then told me, because my injury wasn't localized, but spread through the entire ankle, I wouldn't be able to play sports anymore. I decided to deal with the pain. Two weeks later I tore my achilles on the left foot. Go figure. I walk like a 100 year old man for the first five minutes of every morning. Take care of it, don't push it, and do what the docs tell you. I wish I did.

I really can't complain. Have been blessed with good health through the years. Just the nature of being a contractor and using up body parts over the years. Left ankle. Right knee.... but that has been a thirty five year saga. Getting old. Again, can't complain.

My ankle joint if that is what you call it in my right ankle is actually loose for all the times I sprained or rolled it. Anytime there was a rock to be tripped over I would find it. My PT gal in Marshfield put her weight on top of my right ankle and lifted the foot by the heel and goes, "oh chit it moved". After you ankle heels Ross make it a point to walk every day on a tread mill if you have one. It strengthened my ankle enough so I don't worry about rolling it anymore. Hope you "heel" fast.

Yeah...they are very frustrating and if you are active then they never heal all the way. I was running a couple of weeks ago and a car was coming so I moved to the side of the pavement and since it was dark, I didn't realize the pavement was about 4 inches higher than the grass. I rolled that baby harder than I ever have, cut knees, cut hands and three cars drove by and saw it happen. I could of had a heart attack! At least pull over and laugh at me or something!!!! I took an anti-inflammatory and some pain reliever. Not being a big fan of meds, I stopped. Last night I had a shock wave of pain, out of nowhere, stopped me dead in my tracks, but it went away.

Gonna have to stretch it and strengthen it. A friend of mine went to a Dr. and he said to use an air cast for 2 weeks to keep it stable. Who knows?

Apropos of nothing, I've also spent the last 40 years in work boots. After recently getting plantar fasciitis in both feet at the same time ( really sucked ) it was suggested to me by a podiatrist that the work boots possibly could have led to weakening of my feet. By acting like a cast. So now I wear them only when I really need to and walk bare foot around the house to utilize the foot as nature intended and have noticed an improvement.

I have had bones break, spin upside down and get screwed back together. The worst pain I have ever felt was a very bad ankle sprain. My ankle tripled is size and turned many colors. I thought for sure it was
shattered and I needed surgery. I'd rather break a bone than feel that pain again.

Been running with a friend of mine and he has me going on trails. About a month ago I turned my right ankle so bad my heel came out of my shoe (and I wear tight shoes). I thought I was done but I walked it off a little bit and although still in pain I was able to start running again and finish which was a good thing because we were out in the mddle of the woods. This guy is an accomplished runner and he said if the ankle was sprained before (which I did pretty badly 25 years ago) it heals faster, has anyone heard of this before?

You want pain? I just found out that I am a candidate for a Total Knee replacement. Been walking on cartilage for about 40 years as I lost my ACL long ago. I am currently "bone on bone". Had a cortisone shot that helped for 3 weeks. Got to see the Doc tomorrow.

This is what 40+ years of jumping rocks will do.

Yup. You can actually "walk it #^&#^&#^&#^& it is a moderate sprain. Hurts like a B for a bit. Than is bearable. GRRRR

I was bone on bone for about a year. I did the partial replacement, some days I wish I did the full, it's all muscle pain now though, almost 40 years of atrophy.

You'll be good in 3 mos.. It's routine upgrade these days. My receptionist had both done and added 3 inches in height so she can look her partner in the eye when they dance.

Just don't count the power tools when the wheel in the racks

In 1975 the first of my archaic knee surgeries, a large piece of my cartilage was removed. Just a constant " toothache" in the knee now. So I'm getting the tin man upgrade later this year myself. Too many lockup fall downs in the canal.
Everyone I know who has one wishes they didn't wait so long to do it.

I have some kind of tendon or muscle rollingaround next to my right knee. Been wondering what it was. It came about because of a fall at the ditch. Been to my primary a lot in the last year, but I am not asking her.

rest is the only solution.. I sprained my MCL ice fishing last February... walked with a knee brace and limp and dealt with it all summer... I've been out of the boat two months and am back running again.. go figure..

Paul, my wife had her knee replaced last year and it's as good as new. No pain at all, she went to South County Orthopedics in Wakefield RI.

Remember that a SPRAIN takes longer to heal than a BREAK
just the nature of it....
So with that in mind.....listen to what your ankle is saying MORE

if it says: hey can ya lay off (no bearing weight) me for 15 minutes or so
say sure.... not: .... cant stop right now
that's the KEY to the Lock .... it can recharge with frequent time /outs

on the one hand you have to use it to put a demand on it to heal
and maintain your circulation....(excercise) as does (periodic) ELEVATION
but when you push the boundary too far or too fast it'll back track to day 1

My old ski partner had his ankle fused because of rappelling injury in the Marines 30 years ago. Very serious procedure that involved drilling up through the heel and into the tibia about a foot and inserting a rod. Mandatory rest for 3 months to allow it to fuse and zero chance of it ever bending again.

A very popular procedure for active people with cartilage issues is to perforate the bone ends on both sides of the joint allow stem cells the exude from the marrow and reform cartilage. Microdrilling augmented with peripheral blood stem cells, awesome stuff
