 cutting holes

any reason i cant just use a chainsaw instead of buying an auger?
	 |

I have an auger you can borrow Paul.

From what I just googled up on it....not a problem but 2 things to remember, make sure you have a long enough bar to get through the ice you are cutting (with the recent weather, shouldn't be a problem), and clean all the Bar Oil out of the saw, it will leak into the hole you cut and can gum up your traps and/or reel.

Sounds like a very w-e-t experience

be careful not to scare all the fish away

I've used them for cutting large holes for trapping bait through the ice with a drop net.... I've seen them use them for cutting holes for practicing ice rescue...wear your grundens 'cause it's a wet proposition..

 And don't fall in!!!!
An auger will not make a hole big enough to fall in, a chainsaw could. A little light freeze that night and a little snow fall and if you plan to fish the next day, make sure you know where those big holes are!!! |

How do you plan on clearing the ice from the hole?
You'll either push it down under, or pull it with ice tongs. It would be easier to pick up a hand auger if the ice is less than 8" thick. it would weigh less than a chainsaw and be a hell of a lot cleaner. |

I have tongs if you want them. Neighbor gave me a few. Tongs, not thongs!!!

I've watched the Local Fire Dept. use a chainsaw to get ready for cold water diving / rescue on a local pond. They had no problem cutting a large 6'x6' hole but it was a bitch getting the slab ice out. Took longer by 4X than it did cutting the perimeter.

Cut triangles with a saw its easier and much faster thats the way i used to do it

To pull the plug out so to speak I'm planning on just screwing in a big eye bolt before I make the cuts. Triangle - that's a good idea. I've got a pond in the backyard, next freeze up I'll give it a go. Maybe buzzy will come over and make a video and we can have a few laughs

I watched a dude cut at least 10 holes with a chain saw on saturday through at least a foot of ice... he had it down to a science... he cut triangles.. we were both jigging perch in the same area... and he accounted for himself nicely.. and stayed pretty dry.

nice, should have some safe ice in the backyard in a day or 2. i'll give it a go
