Stick shad rigging
How are you guys rigging these with the best results?
I've seen some with a swivel and split ring and hook on the belly hanger and nothing on the tail Standard set up, treble on belly and tail. Any ways seem better or more productive? Thanks- Chef |
I run a 5/0 treble on belly only. Works well for me.

On the 182s I replace the split rings and trebles and add a split ring to the nose and fish it with a breakaway clip. Getting rid of the back treble will decrease hookups. I have tried a few times with no back hook and ended up putting them back on every time in the middle of good fishing.

I use an extra heavy duty split ring on nose and 2 back to back extra heavy splits attached to a 4/0 treble belly hook. No tail hook. I use same set up with the next size down stick shad too but one size smaller hook, which happens to be my favorite size, and was killer when those sea herring invaded the canal in early Nov. last year.

4/o with a split ring in the middle that is all. Too much damage to the fish with the tail hook. Even if it decreases the hook up percent by 20% its worth it too me as i hate it when i pull the eyes out of fish. I remember the first time i used it when the fishing was insane and after the third fish in a row got busted up pretty good i chopped it of with the Manleys. I think i will try the Professors idea of using 2 spit rings on the belly hook and see how it works.

Split ring on nose, split ring-swivel-cut 4/0 on belly, no tail hook. No foul hooked fish, no bent hooks and no damage to plugs hook hanger.

I got my idea from Mr. Sebile's presentation at Striper Cup this year so I gave it a try. Before I was using Tony's way. Both seem to be the ticket, and I too would rather lose a few fish because of the absent tail hook.

I gave it my best shot last year and I felt that my plug didn't have the right action. I am a firm believer in no trebles on the back as I think they injure more fish than they hook. I like to use a 5/0 or 6/0 Siwash which I tie with bucktail or feathers. Sometimes both. That's the way I'm going this year. |
Same as above with the double split ring...No back hook, got really sick of hooking fish deep or in the side of the head.
|
How about the big magic swimmer... lose the tail hook on that too?

Double splits and no tail hooks on both. Try to keep the maiming to a minimum.
