RI Vacation?

My sister in law is planning a family trip for the summer. We were leaning toward watch hill area, but she found a place in Jamestown. Are there sandy beaches on Jamestown? I know my 5 and 7 year old aren't playing on the rocks at Beavertail. I don't know anything about Jamestown other than Beavertail. Watch hill/ South County better choice?

Theres a beach at mackerel cove.

south county has so much more to offer in terms of the "full-vacation experience"
Jamestown can get boring pretty quickly...

south county all the way... there's no question. anywhere along route 1 from gansett to westerly you cant go wrong. trust me.

What do you look for in a vacation ?

Jamestown is relatively close to Newport and there are nice beaches and restaurants galore.

The misqm beaches are nice too, but you may be surrounded by more college age people.

Misquam is closed :)

Good point about the misquamicut beaches being closed. That area got hammered in Sandy. Jamestown and Newport are just fine now.

I'd go to Jamestown with the idea of spending a lot of time in Newport.

Redsoxticket 03-06-2013 08:07 AM

The distance to the Saltwater Edge is closer from Jamestown.

interesting question...mack cove is a good kids beach and you dont have to deal with the college age crowd, newport is a 5 minute ride...good fishing if you plan on sneaking out at night...

my kids are 12, 9 and 6..if i had to a choice between the two, I'd take jamestown in a second...

bloocrab 03-06-2013 08:57 AM

Jamestown with the Newport Option is what I'd do. Best of both worlds.....you could always head South along rt. 1 for a joyride to SC if your wife gets bored of Newport in the Summer...:biglaugh: (which won't happen).

Zimmy,
Jamestown is beautiful and quiet. There is also a ferry service to Newport so you don't have the hassle of driving/parking there.

2013 Jamestown Newport Ferry Operating Schedule

South County beaches are a crapshoot right now but I expect authorities to do everything in their power to make sure those beaches are open - too important to their economy. Mackeral Cove in Jamestown is a good kids beach. Fairly shallow and not to rough. Some good restaurants in Jamestown.

I typically go south county, but Jamestown might be worth a try. I would choose a beach with big waves. One gender of college kids at the beach is fine with me. But with the kids it is different The kids would like the ferry. If mackeral beach is nice, I think we will give Jamestown a try. Closer to the canal is better for me anyway. My suggestion was sandwich, but I think I got overruled because of the traffic. Maybe I will try fishing the newport area, too. Thanks for the info.

Having a "base of operations" in the quiet of Jamestown with daily raids where ever you want to go based on whatever you want to do does make a lot of sense.

Zimmy,
When the time comes shoot me a PM and maybe we can share a few casts here in Newport where I live. BTW: Newport/Middletown Beaches have bigger waves and are right across the bridge.

the town of westerly has a deadline to put all of that sand back by april if i remember right.. the pyramids are there because machinery was brought in to sift the sand and separate it from storm debris. The beach will be open for the season, as its a huge Tax income for Westerly...

djlesco 03-06-2013 02:29 PM

Signs read all over they will open in the spring

i WENT TO A fUNDRAISER last week & the town manager of Westerly said that the Westerly town beach & Miscq [sp] WILL be open by memorial day .

IMO .I,s go to south county , especially with small kids .......... alot more beaches to choose from .also have the salt ponds for the kids to crab , fish , safe swim , etc

Family friendly
BI Ferry
The minuature golf & waterslides .
More affordable food

OTOH you have a high toll for the bridge / the Drive & Newport beaches are nice .
Everything else is pricy .
Too Me // Newport in the summer . is way too crowded , high prices / parking sucks// &&& IMO the residents are miserable :devil2:

Not U DZ

zimmy 03-06-2013 08:31 PM

i am not a misquamicut person beyond the scenery, but east beach, green hill etc i love. i recommended a couple places on the salt ponds with docks for my tin boat. i will probably be happy wherever we end up.
