Spanish Fly

I have been watching this seasons shows with great interest...kind of a Chapter by Chapter of his life ... and today saw Jose's last show and watched him catch his last fish. It was pretty moving. That entire series was well done.

The fishing community has sure lost some important people in the last few years, both on a national and local level.

Nebe 03-24-2013 06:13 PM

IMHO Spanish fly was the best fishing show I had ever seen. I loved it.

Jose was great but I also think Larry D has a great show. I would pick Jose to fish with though.

bobber 03-25-2013 02:40 AM

Dahlberg has the best show IMHO- but Jose' was great to watch too.

sorry I missed the final episode- there will certainly be a void now that he's gone. but it sure shows how much of an impact he had that there was an entire "tribute season" of programs dedicated to his memory

Mr. Sandman 03-25-2013 07:57 AM

I give Jose the nod but I like Dahlberg too, he is very creative and entertaining but he is from Minnesota. He is a FW guy at heart. Jose had Fl keys salt pumping thru his veins. Jose did more in the water and Dahlberg does more in the shop. Both fished interesting places with interesting people and both know what they are doing. Both have great shows and are fun to watch. Lately I find myself watching Into The Blue, I like the the style of fishing but it can get a little repetitive and the dialog seems forced sometimes. When you watch Jose and Dahlberg, it is like they are talking to you on the boat not narrating a show.

CM is a goofball and for the life of me I can not understand why anyone would watch that. It is probably the same people who like the kardashians, snooki and Jwow and wicked tuna.:devil2:

SpanishFly was a great show...very informative...

The worst show is michael moore...how can anyone watch him

sokinwet 03-25-2013 08:47 AM

Both Spanish Fly and Larry D are great shows but I've gotta give the edge to Larry just because of the great vintage guitar and amp collection in his shop!

bassballer 03-25-2013 08:50 AM

can you get Spanish Fly seasons on DVD? Id love to pick up a box set. Can find any though.

I read in a fishing book that stated that Larry was a paid guide when he was a kid. He was taught at a young age to be patient and to practice, practice, practice.

One test of the person's ability is that they can talk to you, not at you (like Charlie Moron). Larry and Jose' both are great sportsmen. They are able to get you to understand what they are telling you to do without yelling or whooping it up (again, C. Moron) and you truly feel like you are with them when they are on tv.

They will talk about others MORE than about themselves, partly to show why they like the person they are talking about, and partly to show you that they ARE regular people.

Here's my take on these men: They would be willing to help you out if you were having trouble, to give up their fishing time to ensure you were able to enjoy the experience.

(C. Moore-on would say "Enough about me, let's talk about you.....so, what do you like about me??"

Jose will be missed, but NEVER forgotten!
Larry will always have a place in my heart, if for nothing else than instilling a sense of adventure even when fishing my own local persh pond.

Jose and Larry and Flip's shows I always try to tune into and mostly because of what someone else said about them not being loud or in your face, but knowledgeable and willing to share that. Another I have have been watching, and I don't flyfish much, is Buccaneers and Bonefish, narrated by Tom Brokaw. I find it sort of relaxing listening to him.

smac 03-26-2013 05:24 PM

the show/ commercial outakes on the websight were funny.

bigpopper 03-27-2013 12:09 AM

Walkers Kay Chronicles with Flip Pallot..Great show, and I don't even flyfish. He was great at making an adventure of it all.

No one could hold a candle to Jose. Larry D is the man, don't get me wrong, but I really learned a lot from years of the Spanish Fly. He is a huge reason of why I love live bait so much. I'm still bummed he's gone :(

Raider Ronnie 03-27-2013 05:58 AM

I could be wrong but didn't Jose start out with or get his start on TV with Flip ?

Zeno 03-27-2013 10:04 AM

I agree with you bassballer, Walker Kay Chronicals and the Spanish Fly are my 2 favorites. I
wish I could have fished with Jose.

beamie 03-27-2013 10:22 AM

I think Dahlbergs probably my favorite latey. Use to like Mark Sosin but he hasn't been around. And the reason I liked them is i want to watch fishing and more fishing. And some rigging info and knot tying etc.

What I really can't stand is the after fishing sitting around the resort pool blabbling about that day as they suck down thier $15 shrimp cocktail and $12 bloodmary as Pedro brings it to them in his bare feet. No, sorry I....rather listen to someone sittin on a tailgate with a can of Gansett in thier hand showing how to rig a trolled biat. Jose was guilty of this talking stuff too, but it was a fine show.

sks 03-27-2013 10:42 AM

Little bit diff. kind of shows but I like watching Bass 2 Billfish and I wanna go fishin'. The second one have not seen for a while but I like both those guys. Peter Miller for B2B can't remember the other guys name. Both seem to be regular guys, at least on tv. You guys ever see them? Never missed Jose, The Man.

bassballer 03-27-2013 12:24 PM

There needs to be a fishing channel.
