Glad no one was hurt, but that was an accident just waiting to happen.
It seems like an epidemic across the state, if not the region. People are either reluctant to, or are deterred from removing old trees from theirs and adjacent properties. Then something like this happens and the insurance gurus come out of the woodwork. Where I live we see way too many trees that need to be trimmed or removed that are allowed to stand year after year. A tree from a house across our street fell last year and totaled my brother's car. That tree had half the trunk rotted out, and should have been removed a long time ago. We had 2 trees removed from our front yard, mainly because of roots growing into our sewer pipes. After last years storms, I can safely say that removing the bigger tree was a VERY wise choice. Hopefully the damage is purely cosmetic and there is no structural repairs that are needed. One added plus is that you will have a lot of seasoned firewood if you need it. |
It's down and cut to 16" lengths. Black Locust. Burns extremely hot. Wood is going to a friend who does masonry and roofing.... He will strip, I do structural repairs, which are minor, he will roof and weave the valley. Works for me! Adjustor arrived as the guys were getting in their truck. Quick walk through, I send some other pics to him and we should be good. We will see...
Yes, I should have taken it down after topping, many years ago. But the wood was solid right down to ground level. All of us expected to find some interior rot and were surprised the center was not rotted at all... Which was why I was (wrongly) in no hurry to take down. |
then the only conclusion is that the top grew heavy with water weight
unless you've experienced high winds |
The big tree that we took down from our front yard was a locust tree.
Hard wood, burned hot, and lasted for quite some time after it seasoned a year. We still have a few logs rolling around our yard that are leftovers. One is used as a chopping block. The tree we took down was well over 50' tall, and at least 3' wide at the base, and solid all the way through. |
The tree that fell on my house during Irene was also a locust. Mine was perfectly healthy and was uprooted by the wind. Yours obviously had some root rot. Big chunk of wood!
|
The tree that fell on MY house was actually a magic bean stalk
and the dammed giant hadn't changed his socks in years. It took the army corps engineers a full week to remove him. lol |
Wow. Missed it by that much.
|
Well ain't that a nice "howdy-do"

Just got the non renewal notice today from Quincy Mutual.... Waiting for call back from agent. Never been through this before. If they are going to cancel my homeowners, there is no effing way I will keep my three auto policies with them....... Yeah, good :fury: people.
Time to light them up on the internet. |
What did they base it on?? These Ins. Companies suck!!

You're fine as long as you're NEVER late with a payment and you NEVER make a cliam. Then they are your friend. But, be late one time or actually need the service you've been paying them for for years, and they drop you like a diseased rat. Shop around and make it a point to tell them EXACTLY what you think of them and why you are canceling their auto policies. Oh, and if you prepaid your auto policy for the year, they should reimburse you a prorated amount for the portion of the year you won't be covered by them. |
There should be laws or government regulation of these types of goings on when someone who pays their premiums on time for years and never so much as files a claim....and then they do....and then the friggin' company drops them as a result!!!!!!!
|
this is unreal, well hey they just lost a loyal customer and I for one would never use them!

problem is...they answer to no one |
15 years ago my family had a Christmas Day fire. Damage was close to 100k. My dad had a good sized umbrella policy with a major insurer...they still tried to nickel and dime him.
Well, that rafter isn't THAT charred. There are times like this when it pays to be an #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&. -spence Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
Never had a problem with Amica since 1987, tree through the roof, multiple auto claims, etc..
Write the check, if you need more call the adjuster. |

That stinks Ross.
I had this happen back in April of 2007 when we had that horrific rainstorm before patriots day. I will say the insurance wasn't all that bad, but they did nickel and dime alot and underestimate what it costs to fix things. This included new roof, replacing 1/2 of the trusses, personal property and all the wiring inside. I did ok and was able to have everything repaired that was needed by skipping stuff like replacing one of the garage doors and having it professionally cleaned, using leftover siding etc. What I don't like though is you the response you get if something new happens. They remind you that you had a claim and your rates will go up if you have any more. So I have ended up fixing stuff myself lately. I don't think having a tree hit my garage puts me at high risk to have my french door window break when I open it etc......but filing a claim would result in higher rates. Anyway I wanted to share something I learned from this. Make sure you have enough insurance on your house and also from this case separate buildings if you have them. My garage was covered as a percentage, I think 10% of the main policy. Usually how they cover sheds etc. I had enough to cover things, but if the tree were to go straight thru the middle requiring a rebuild I would have been screwed. I asked my contractors what it would cost to rebuild from the ground up if necessary and re did my policy for that amount plus some. Good luck. |
Best money making scheme there is...I went through that many years ago with Libery mutual... my Ex wife was side swiped by an hit and run driver..they paid the claim and refused to renwew the policy... one that I paid in full upon reciept of the bill every year..they really need to be accountable to someone..I know in my case.. the amount of money I had paid them through the years far exceeded the cost of the repairs..good luck Ross.. sometimes it's just not fair..LIGHT 'EM UP!

Agent called me back, and that is why I stay with him, meaning I believe in utilizing an agent as opposed to spending hours on hold trying to resolve stuff on my own, which is what I believe it would be with these advertised firm like geico and amica... That said, he got them to agree to renew with no lapse, mostly because he writes a fair amount of business with them. BUT, the premium would be up by XXX which I have since calculated to be a 25.9% increase, AND my deductible goes from $500 to $2500..... Is that supposed to be a good deal? After reviewing my old policy and doing the calculations, I have another call into him.
Two other companies I inquired with refused coverage because I was (well)within 1800 feet of the water.... They must not have seen topographical maps....:smash: |
