FOR SALE: WILD STRIPED BASS

I had dinner at Captain Marden's, Wellesley, yesterday. To my surprise, 15 + lb. class fillets were for sale in the fish market section, and labeled/marketed as such.

I thought these fish were not allowed to be transported into, or sold in MA except during the specifically defined "commercial plunder season". What am I missing here?

I saw the same thing up on Whole Foods in Hadley earlier this week.

Nope...

Dealers need to have tags with origin of state and comply with that states regulations. Only during the MA commercial season all dealers regardless of what state the fish came from have to follow MA commercial regulations until the quota is reached plus 5 days.

It opens July 12th and say on July 31st the quota is reached and the season is closed.. All striped bass from other states bought have to follow the MA regulations up until August 5th.

It's currently from Virginia and yes it's legal to sell in a fish market.

Another story is that there's a fish market in Portland, ME currently selling it as "local striped bass".

You won't ever see that in Maine as it's illegal period to sell Stripers here. Been that way since the 60's

Thank you, Mr. Typhoon and Leptar, for enlightening me. Your information is saddening. It is a loophole.

i saw some in my local fish store also. I asked the same question "who was open"......he said "maryland". The filet was off about a 30 pound bass, looked fresh.
