Lawn Mower Suggestions
My Toro self-paced is now transitioned from a minor oil leak to major puddles, might be time for a new mower? I work my mowers hard through the season and have changed oil usually 2X per season. Not sure how old but maybe 7-8yrs.
I am conflicted to get another Toro that way I have lots of spare parts or go for something else. Suggestions? No riders/tractors for me. |
I'll bet Rocky used one of those old self propelled ones that when the wheels spun that propelled the cutting drum :uhuh:

I have a Cub Cadet and love it. It is self propelled and had one hand one lever wheel height adjustment. Easy to use bagger and a taller handle so I am not bent over while cutting. Had a Craftsman and hated it.
|
Forgot to mention: must be a recycler, I don't bag clippings.

if cost is an issue....
i bought a reconditioned (like new) toro at home depot for allot less than you'd pay for the same one brand new it was a rear bagger but you can just not use the bag if you don't re-use cuttings to mulch the garden and feed the worms or generate heat (nitrogen) in the compost pile. |
I went with a Honda last year and so far it has shown to be the best mower I've owned so far. Even after the long winter, one pull from the rope and it started right up. It also has electric start, but I wanted to put their claims to the test. It's a rear bagger, but you can choose not to bag and place the setting on mulch. The dual blades mulch the clippings very fine and won't leave big clumps to rake up afterwards.
Honda Lawn Mowers: HRX217VLA, HRX217K4VLA |
Find an old 21 inch Sensation or Bobcat, push, swing over handle mower.
I bought mine in 1960 and still use it. Used it commercially for a few years and then on my own lawn since. Had to replace 2 rubber tires in that time and that's it. No effort at all to push. |
Honda... great engine and made to last

Love my Honda HRC216HXA.. going on 6 years...
My yard eats mowers. There is ledge in the back so most tree roots are on the surface. Bump a root and pop a rock... Other then a yearly oil change and as long as i'm careful with the height and don't rush blades are once a year for me too... I mulch if i have other things to do, if it's cool out with no breeze i'll bag... When i bought the house, i bought a homedepot mower for $300,,, I returned it bought the honda they had.. and i broke a wheel off... I went to sears and bought a craftsman with a honda engine and that let go... went back got another and the transmission stopped working... Paid the landscaper $100 he wanted to finish the lawn as he did most of it with the wackers in the back as he said to me he wasn't going to mess up his machines.. he passed with the rider and brush to pick up the clippings... He recommended 2 commercial grade machines. A toro and a honda.. I forgot the toro model but the machine was backordered so i went with the honda... both were the same price.. My wife was not happy when she saw push mower for the price of a rider we were looking at... I just ordered a set of Honda blades for $27 delivered. Other then that the cables get a shot of cable lube at the end of the season. second pull and it's running. |
I'm partial to the Toro's.... my wife does the mowing.... that includes.. rock gardens.... ornamental ducks... roots and any debris on the lawn... it's going on ten years.... i sharpen the blade ( or replace it if it's real bad) twice a year.... one oil change a season when i put it away... clean the air filter a few times a season... it's been smackin' grass and whatever else is in it's path for 10 years... and still starts on the second pull... same goes for the snow blower...

Joe, your wife sounds like my son. Its too much trouble to stop and move it so I'll run it over and make another pass and let the bagger suck it up.

The Honda commercial grade are great for your dollar we have that and the next size down at the golf course and both arengood mowers but the commercial grade walk behind has more bulk to the wheel frame and better bearing system in the wheels. The wheels will be the first thing to go. I perps ally have the commercial grade and I can't kill it!!! I want another mower but it keeps firing right up first pull everytime I drag it out of the damn basement

Thanks for all the very good suggests. I purchased a Husqvarna, it has a Honda engine. Model is the 800HW. About 1/2 $$ of the Honda HRX lineup.

BTW - Toro going strong - 10 years without an oil change, just ceck it and keep it full. First pull every year, has hit stumps and rocks and takes the hit like a champ. Never even replaced or sharpened the blade, I think at this point it is just beating the lawn down into submission. :smash: :jump1: |
