US VS250 question?

Question? Is the reel schematically the same as the new reels. Aside from the obvious different drag and internal counter weight.

The center shaft is on both schematics but the present model is made of solid titanium.

I guess my question relates more to the removal of the side plate. Is the side plate threaded like the new models or is it press fit? I just want to be able to service the reel myself.
I have sent the reel off for service in the past and never had anything fall under lifetime warranty. So I guess I am just getting tired of having to send it to Oklahoma to get serviced. I have a way of opening it and don't care about the warranty so much. I just feel like it has to go in every year for something. Getting on my nerves a little to spend 100 to 125 every year to get it serviced. I have spent enough on service to have bought another reel at this point.

Probably the same but to be safe just email craig@vanstaal.com with the serial number to be sure.

Jackbass 05-29-2013 09:16 AM

Serial # in the 3000's to be honest when I first got it I was psyched to get a US model with a lifetime warranty I now wish I had a Chinese manufactured unit. Every year I lose bearing the line roller was some funky thing that had to be replaced because it popped off for no reason. I wish they were still doing the trade in this thing has been a head ache. I try not to talk crap on line about products not my style. Everyone has a bad day but three years in a row it has been sent to Oklahoma for issues related to some failure in the reel. I just want to fish. I don't want to have to service the thing but having it go down for a week or two screws me up. If I could service it myself I could turn it around when these failures happen in 3 or fewer hours. Spent a lot of money to deal with this nonsense I could have bought three cabo's or emblems or anything. I haven't even Dunked the damn thing in two years as most of my wetsuiting has been with my ZX22 which still works like a top after two years and it has barely been rinsed.

I have a 200 thats serial# 206. Ive never cleaned it, serviced it, or anything and is still smooth as can be, and it looks like its been dragged behind my car.

See that is my issue no one I know has ha the problems I am having. I have been religious about sending it to Oklahoma and it comes back perfect every time. They even turn around the reel fairly quickly. Longest I have waited was maybe 2 weeks from the time it left my hands til the time I got it back.

That's good because they won't take it to clean it is so old. I have #127 and those early ones are so different they might need to make up parts from thin air to service it :devil2:

That's what this guy said too!! I guarantee you the next day of big fish on it and it would lock up!!
Rinse your reels off and keep the spool shaft clean, add a drop of gear oil to it after wiping it down, and get the main seal changed at least once a year.

MAKAI 05-30-2013 05:57 PM

I do rinse, WD, back of the drag after every use. They're still very smooth just dinged up from too many canal falls.
