learning curve

How long does it take to get used to switching to a conventional? I have only tried(and failed) a handful of times to get a decent cast w/ a conventional reel. Bought an old Honey Lami at a yard sale which is in good shape. Was thinking of converting it over, but now thinking maybe giving it a shot. What would be a good reel to start w/? Mainly for "canal type" fishing. Thanks

I would look for an abu 7000, not the 7000i that came out a few years ago. They are easy to use, durable and relatively inexpensive. I upgrade the drags to smootie washers. There are tons of tweaks that can be made to them but most are not necessary. When you practice i would go with a sinker or a tin that does not catch the wind. Adjust the freespool so it just creeps down. It should take you long at all. Make sure the reel is a levelwind.
