Radar for 21 ft. CC
 

Getting ready to spend the cash. I am looking for recommendations.

Stand alone or networked ?
New or used ?

Simrad/Lowrance 3G is a good deal right now.

New and hooked into a NEMA2000 network. Right now everything on the net is Garmin.

Go with Garmin.
Radar is very good.

Paul, when I got the Onslow it had everything but radar. I had an 18" dome put in and interfaced it with my Garmin unit for overlay. Works fantastic for boats and buoys.

were you out in that BI fog last night yesterday morning? I think BI has been in a solid fog bank going on 2 weeks straight.

I would go with the garmin. I wish I could get one, but i haven't seen a nice way to put one on without a ttop.

On my Sailfish i opted out of the radar. Figured I wouldn't need it. Last week we were heading back in with Pea soup fog. Couldnt see 30 yards in front of me. I was kicking myself that I didnt get that radar. Thinking of having it interfaced with my lowrance shortly.

thanks guys. I'm going to go with garmin. Zacs, you need to have a radar bracket fabricated if you have a t-top like me. My marina yard manager can do it.

They can Fab A post w/ a bracket off your console / u don,t need a t/t

i haven't seen a mast/post setup that would work well on my boat. maybe i will poke around and see what i can find.

Zacs you have the Northcoast 19 Correct? Im sure Northcoast would give you some tips and suggestions on how to mount that. From what I hear they are good to deal with.

I don't like the fog and I have radar. Bad decisions on the water can have fatal outcomes , wise up and protect yourselves guys. People who have radar fear the ninnies running around without.

One of the Jersey guys (Simrad sponsored Seacraft 23) had an arch made off the console that has his radar and vhf antenna.

I have all Garmin right now too and am pricing radar myself. Have heard good things about the same as Ron states.

Zac, it shouldn't be a big deal to make something up, the radome isn't very heavy.

I fear the "ninies" that have it but have no clue how to use it.. or decide that because they have it they can travel at break neck speed.....I've seen many a boat with radar sitting high and dry in the fog.. while I ...with out radar slowly and cautiously picked my up river on my way home.. sounding my horn every few minutes...... being a responsible skipper goes a long ways towards being safe in any weather.. that includes fog...dont get me wrong radar is a nice option.. but just because you dont have it doesn't make you a "ninny".. just sayin'

Mike, agreed but my yard manager says that the aluminum welding guys will charge me about $500 to 600 to weld a plate to mount the dome on. Then about $1000 for the closed array, $2500 for the garmin 7000 series chart plotter and another $200 to 300 to wire it in. By the time you get done you're into this for $4000 to $5000.
I can catch a lot of fish, and do, without spending another $5K

that is pretty much how it went for me, Paul, after I started looking into it. not worth the $$$.

You can bolt a plate to your top for a lot less than a grand, and it will be just as secure.

No disrespect, but in my world any skipper who decides to venture out in fog is not only endangering himself, but also those unfortunate enough to be at the skipper's mercy. What you describe as a "nice option" is an essential piece of equipment for a true responsible skipper.One that I don't take a chance with just like my gear. There are plenty of heroes who have littered the shore because they knew "their" water.Tight Lines

Radar should be used as a safety tool ( to return you to home port safe)

I see to many people who use radar as the reason they can leave port
in bad weather at full throttle
