Menhaden Defenders

I recently learned of the Menhaden Defenders organization.

Anyone familiar with them?

Good organization?

The cause makes sense. But, does approach to a solution make sense?

Thank you in advance for your valued feedback.

Tight lines.

Would like to hear more

Scientific fact, the biggest determinant to Menhaden populations is the weather.

Are you implying pogie boats and the omega 3 fishery have no impact?

Because here in the Taunton river the biggest determinant to Menhaden populations is whether or not the pogies boats takes them all..

They have very little impact over the entire range, but they do have a local impact.

they are run by NJ guys primarily and have been very active in working towards a more conservative management approach to bunker catch levels. they have organized political rallys/meetings at various committee meeting and email/phone call campaigns to representatives involved in the managment process.
they seem legit, and are on "our side" (so to speak)

Is their end game to provide more forage for our beloved fish or just for the general betterment of the ecosystem? I guess it's all good, but interested to know if they are fishermen.

Yes. Thanks John R. I updated the original.

MakoMike,

Thank you for the feedback.

I hear you on weather. Weather is definitely a natural force. But, in the end, nature hates imbalance and has a way to reach equilibrium.

I also hear you on the local impact of trawlers. But, from "system" point of view, local unnatural forces can impact the global system if gone unchecked. There are several scientific and engineering examples of this.

When natural and unnatural forces are combined...OMG. :-(.

Thanks bobber. I did not know that.

Matt,

My impression is that it's both goals.
