Mung Weed on Outer Cape
Visited four Wellfleet beaches this afternoon (outgoing tide) with my bride of 42 years. Did not see any trace of Mung weed. Also did not see any sign of bait fish or birds working schools of baitfish. Saw just one gray seal.
Anybody have current striped bass fishing report from outer Cape Cod? Hope to fish there at night next few weeks but today (Wed. Sept. 18th, 2013) place looked devoid of marine life. |
You just gave the report....seals!:uhuh:

Outgoing tide and the NNW wind we've had recently blew the mung out. This is common with NW wind out there. Winds going back WSW next couple nights could bring it to life. Bring the eels, cover some ground and you might get a big reward.

Thanks Back Beach. I can deal with seals (don't see them on dark nights) and great white sharks but Mung Weed drives me crazy. Wellfleet beaches looked way too clean to me.
I'm sure the gusty north/northwest winds (last Monday) blew out the weed. Thanks for the heads up. |
it may have blown the mung out away from the outer beaches, but it blew it into a bay beach :wall:

Funny, last weekend I attempted to fish the Monomoy rips, some of the most munged up conditions I have seen in a while out there. Its a floating mess and the only savior was I was in a boat. I used to HATE walking to the Nauset inlet and finding it munged up. At least in the boat we could poke around.

Mung is nuts. I used to get the local pass at cahoons and mid summer I would watch the tourists come down with rented rods and their hi lo's or tins and cast out into it then watch as they spent a half hour clearing the line. On occasion though they would school me and drag a blue or bass in. That I would really enjoy. Jealous to be honest. I wish I could get that excited about about a single fish

Mung can be a pain from the surf no doubt but it moves around with the tide and if you're patient it can be mitigated. The stuff has been out there since the beginning of time thus its always been present to some degree.
I can tell you all the years I fished from a small 12' aluminum boat out there the mung was what we looked for as it provided cover for the fish. Rarely did you catch a fish if mung wasn't present, believe it or not. From the shore its a bit different but you can still find holes in the mung patches if you keep walking along and sometimes you nail the fish right on the edges. Seals are a different story but I feel people simply throw seals and mung as lazyman's excuses for not making the effort to fish out there. Like the mung, seals move to other places at times, leaving opportunity for the committed. |

Ugh !
Walking fish back up into the dune because the guides were jammed with and the line had 30 pounds of mung on it was a real drag. Did get some nice fish that way though. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |
