suggestions for matching new Shimano Stella 10000 to surf rod (Century?)
 

new to this site yesterday. Looking for suggestions on matching my new Stella 10000 for a high quality surf road. After doing some investigation if appears that Century might be a good choice. Called their importer and they advised I call the Cape Cod Century rep for help in selecting a rod. I believe Canal Bait sells them, not sure where I should shop for one.

Since I am reasonably new to surf fishing looking for help from the more experienced. What determines which rod I select ? 9', 10', 11' ??
I see some speak "factory" and some say "custom" ? They have quite a few models so hopefully can get some suggestions.

I really want an extremely high quality rod to match the Stella. Is Century the only rod I should consider, if not please advise. I know a lot of guys at the canal were using stella/century combo's.

Would probably purchase it at the Cape, just not sure where I should go.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Depends on what you want to do with it. For a big reel like that maybe the 1327 or 1328 or one of the new Northeast models.

Hi Dave, I believe I spoke to you on the phone couple months ago. Regarding your quote.... since I am somewhat new to this exactly what determines "selection" of a Century rod. Could you give me just a brief explanation of what "you do with the rod" that would change the model selected. I believe I will be spending a fair amt of time at the canal.

Does fishing with lures vs bait (live or not) change selection ?
Does lure size limit model choices ?
Pole length - from 9' to 11++ - does length only equate to distance ?
and from your quote I would guess size reel has to "match up" for bal.

They talk "custom" vs "factory".... is this something I need to consiider

any light you can shed would be most appreciated.

who had good selections for me to look at ?

Learning to surf fish at the canal is like learning to drive at a drag strip.
Just sayin'.

I was thinking the same thing George, I can't imagine having learned to surf fish there.

You should have seen me last night trying to (re)learn how to use a conventional there. Just when I think I'm starting to figure things out, I do something that makes me realize how much I still don't know.

I hear ya! I dusted off my convench recently. Used to have an "educated" thumb years ago. I was a bit rusty myself.

There are a lot of great rods available right now and lots of options and all price ranges, its best to narrow it down to a length and target plug/bait weight range then compare all models that fit the bill. test cast and handle as many as you can and pick the one that best suits your needs.
