T and Ps for Shawno (again)
Shawn has been making trips up to the Salmon River the last few weeks. Apparently a Brown Recluse found it's way into his waders and he was bit in the upper thigh. He thought it was an ingrown hair and didn't seek treatment for about a week. He currently is in recovery from surgery right now in Holyoke Hospital. They had to remove two softball sized chunks of meat from his leg. He isn't out of the woods yet. Depending how the antibiotics take effect he might have to get further surgeries. Has not been a good year for my best bud (lost his mom this year too, who was the last surviving member of his immediate family). He could really use some good thoughts right now. Thanks!

DUDE! Thoughts & Prayers for a strong recovery!

Holy #^&#^&#^&#^&! Those are ground spiders. Must have crawled in and bit him when he put them on. I fear those things big time. I hope he gets through this with no issues besides scarring.

A friend just went through this. When his flesh started turning black he hit up the E room and stayed for 5 days.

It weird that for a small spider (in terms of size relatative to tarantulas) that its bite can be so destructive.
Keep in mind that the bite itself isn't what could kill you outright, but the composition of the venom and the cause it has on your muscles and tissues. Most fatalities from BR bites are from the necrosis caused by the venom. The skin dies and causes a major infection throughout that part of the body, which usually results in a larger area of tissue loss than the bite site. I hope he recovers fully, and doesn't have to endure any further surgery. The rehab and recovery will be painfull enough! |
best wishes for a speedy recovery

Hope he recovers quickly. Did they happen to actually SEE the spider? this is well outside of the spiders normal range.

Best wishes and get well soon. I don't like to kill spiders because I always thought they do some good, but there seem to be a lot more around and it freaks me out when I'm in my yard at night and get a spider web facial.

Prayers will be offered up at Mass Sat afternoon

I talked to him for about half an hour yesterday. It was a really big deal, and he's doing pretty well considering.
He should be out sometime today. I wish I would have seen this thread before I called...this kind of stuff means a lot to him. The next time that we speak I'll let him know that everybody's been sending him props. Thanks, Rick |
Great news Ricky,keep us posted.
