theres a thick chaulky residue by the guides and where it meets the cork. so whats up with this rod? its a st Croix premier surf. its always had an odd habbit of turning opaque in these area after prolonged exposure to wet but always returned to normal after drying out. it's my go to rod for the surf

I took a scrubbie to one spot and some of it came off

Funny you mention this,I had the the same with my St Coix and Loomis.
What I found was after fishing I would always wash them down with fresh water,if I didn't dry them off the opaque / cloudinus Would stay.
So what I found was stripping the reels off the rods twice a season and washing them good with soap and water then waxing them.

So after each use I would rinse them off and the cloudiness wouldn't happen.....

Works for me.

Good question, happened with mine as well... I thought it was just moisture underneath the epoxy... didnt seem to really do anything and goes away so I let it be

I had the same with one of mine and now I hose them down after each trip.

I believe it is the finish. I think at least St Croix uses Flex Coat brand finish. Flex Coat is known for turning cloudy like this after exposed for a long time to excessive moisture.

This is why many guys wrapping rods use AftCote. Not sure about the other finishes like ProCoat, U40 and the few others you can get. I have stuck with AftCoat.

Niko, I wonder it you let it dry good and scotch brite it good and put a topcoat of Aftcote over it would make it stop happening.

May try wiping some alcohol over it to dry it out.

I can do this for you but go back to work soon. Mid April can do.

How is the boat search going?

I have had it happen on a Loomis, a Lami and a Pac Bay. All wrapped by different guys. It always seems to go away after a few days.

yo beamie, i'll try cleaning it up and you can topcoat it when you get back, thx. maybe we will pour another run of plastics - I need some smaller stuff. boat search is slow and steady. prob a good thing, gives me some time to look at a bunch of different options. when you going? got time for a tog trip this week?

I think about the 15th. If the weather looks good I think I can get a tog trip in with ya.

Some smaller plastics would be good. I have had some ideas in my head again. I'm thinking a little bit of shotshell shot sprinkled into the bait halfway thru the pour to add some weight for throwing and getting it down farther and faster.

As has been suggested, the cloudiness is formed by moisture under the finish. I have used many different finishes and cannot say that one is more likely to cloud up than another.

Moisture can get under the finish through a crack or a chip in the finish or if the finish fails to cover all of the thread wrap. Moisture can also be wicked under the finish and into if the color preserver used on the thread (before the finish is applied) extends farther out from the thread than the finish does.

As has been observed, the cloudiness will go away when the thread dries. A topcoat of finish that extends beyond the original finish will most certainly fix the problem.
