Any charter captains do winter striper trips on the Thames?

My 7 year-old is not happy about hanging up the rods for the winter. I know AL Anderson used to do winter trips on the Thames, but I heard he is retiring. DO any other pro's do this?

You might want to check with Capt. Al last I talked to him he was still planning on fishing the Thames this winter.

Mike Roy of Reel Cast Charters fishes the Housatonic for hold overs during the winter. Not sure if he does the Thames but probably worth a call to see.

I appreciate that suggestion. I have thought about ice fishing. I have never been, not once. I have no gear, zip. And in central CT, I'm not sure how good the ice fishing is. But about 5 years ago, I was hiking on some trails with my golden retriever in the winter. The trails go around a small pond, I saw a bunch of guys ice fishing, and I talked to them. It was a cold day, but no wind, so easy to dress for. Everyone was catching perch. And the atmosphere...it was almost like tailgating...dads and kids were throwing a football around, some guys had grills on the banks of the pond, everyone was sharing burgers, dogs, and beer. Everyone was super friendly, and it looked like an absolute blast. I don't know a single person who does it, but I have to believe that's in my near future.

I have seen you mention ice fihsing, do your kids enjoy it?

My kids don't like to fish at all....My scouts love it though.

You hit the nail on the head Jim. Ice fishing is a very 'social' form of fishing. Lots of fun and lots if laughs, and sometimes lots of food! :)

My kid has always loved being out on the ice. Gets us out of the winter to have some fun!

Go on iceshanty.com. You will find some good people. Also check out the guy on there who does ice charters. Take a charter and see if you like it.

I did the same thing with Al once, we caught dozens of 15 inch fish, but we also caught a handful over 28 inches. And it wasn't for me, it was for my 9 year old nephew who my brother had just adopted. In this case, while that kind of fishing isn't necessarily my particular brand of vodka, my 7 year-old would love the non-stop action. It beats staying inside on a nice day...

Who does ice fishing charters?

The Dad Fisherman 12-17-2013 08:21 AM

There's Charters on Winnipesaukee, Champlain, and most of you big northern lakes.

Yo Adrien Charters pops into my mind for Winni....

That's funny!

Interesting enough...I fished a night striper trip at Block with Al once, and I didn't care much for his attitude (but boy did we catch fish, that is a man who knows his business). Then I fished with him once on the Thamnes with my little nephew, and he could not have been more pleasant.

No idea who Al is... Catching schoolies on wire holds no thrill for me.
