First storm for 2014
 

Two lows combining for a noreaster with some astronomical tides.... Thursday night into Friday for most of the snowfall. Currently looking for up to a foot up this way, but a little too early to see the exact tract.
Go through the blower, again. Still have sand and salt from last go around. Going to be very cold too..... Friday midday tide looks to be of the most concern.

Hype machine getting geared up. How long before we hear the word " blizzard" from the forecasters? Gonna get my bread and water tomorrow...

Bought another 50 lbs of Salt @ Homies...
that big rain storm we had yesterday put me back on Crutches
on SATURDAY when both knee's started to malfunction....
(they could feel the pressure)

Raven, check with your town's DPW, they will sometimes allow residents to take salt and salt/sand in buckets or small barrels. Maybe it's not feasible for you to do so due to to distance or whatever, but it might save you some $$ if they do. I know in our town, its welcomed. Just a thought.

this "new" stuff is green salt and it melts ice down to
5 degrees or some shet like dat

if i can get some sunshine hitting the tar the snow never gets a hold
and becomes an ice sheet....

if only it was like the James bond car....where you push a button
and ice cleats pop out of your tire's tread

i usually carry a bucket and a shovel in case i see a spill...........
down at the turn around "IF" i happen to escort the wifey to work
as they usually loose 5 gallons worth, and that'll do my whole driveway

i spread it before the storm.....to gain an edge

Plowing roads for the state has it's advantaged.

Hey, I am not a one to hype up a storm into something it is not. But 10-14 inches, with additional possible along immediate coast, plus the projected winds, plus sub zero temps on Saturday morning, you would have to be stupid not to pay attention.... Seeing many local schools being cancelled already for both Thursday and Friday is a joke, though. With this pattern setting up, and this town being surrounded on three sides by ocean, I know we will get whacked pretty good by Friday mid morning.

I read on FB earlier that the weather guys named this storm, same as they would during hurricane season.

Blizzard warnings posted for Long island. Still thinking coastal Massachusetts will see blizzard conditions. Weather channel been naming storms for a couple years. Stupid. They also have the whole State painted in for 12 to 18 inches while the local stations are saying 8 to 12

IMO weather has not gotten worse in my lifetime. It has been sensationalized and dramatized by the media which has expanded greatly. Naming any weather system esp with a human name dramatizes even more for no good reason. I still hear people...Insurance bought me a new boat when I was Hugo'ed.

To name a snowstorm is absurd. Come on. How much attn do you weather guys need. For God sake Jim Cantore is now considered a celebrity.

What's wrong with naming the storm or storms? People will talk about them no matter what. Like the BLIZZARD of 78!! Who cares if it was called Theodore or 78? Maybe some should stop watching the news and do like the old times and get stuck with no bread or milk. Lol

They named the "Blizzard of 78" for a reason....it was truly a 100 year storm! These are simply....snow storms...plain and simple.

i always get lake effect snow because the res is behind me (5 miles of it)
and it contributes to the depth we get with these super storms of the century.

Do you think if they had the technology that we have now the storm coverage may have been different? Yes...plain and simple. People would have been warned days in advanced and there would have been crazy coverage leading up to it and throughout it. They named it the blizzard of 78 simply because there was no other name for it.

Twc is calling this one "Hercules" all I can think of when I see that is that scene in the nutty professor.

i already am seeing blizzard-like conditions

so i went out and hung a new bird-feeder on the big set-up
then i nailed a short piece of antique 12" wide
clapboard on top to create a little more shelter
partially covering the wooden gutter section which
i STUFFED with beef Suet for the pecker heads

maybe you missed it... but out in WISCONSIN (Ronnie)
and other Snow plowers...
the CHEESE factories have these HUGE vats of SALT brine
that they used to PAY to get rid of when the whey was finished processing
the cheese blocks....
NOW they SELL it to the SNOW plow companies and mix
the very salty BRINE water with their SALT to make it more
spreadable since it cannot freeze thus saving $40,000 dollars.

the only down side..... in CHEESE HEAD LAND
is now all the streets SMELL like CHEESE !

We'll see some surge from this storm, but not a lot, track is to the east, wrong side of the storm down here. The cape and south shore of MA will get clocked though....

Today's morning hightide (Tiverton) was 5.5ft...the highest for the month of Jan.

Massive no but pretty high.Tomorrow morning's will be 5.4.But like Rock said not so bad for us down this way.

Predicting -2 in Providence Friday night into Sat. That means maybe -4 or colder for me. Also predicting big tides for MA coastal areas facing Northeast for tonight.

The Blizzard of 78 was a monumental storm. Tonight we are having a foot of snow. Pretty typical for January. Boston area and out on the Cape may get 6 inches more but I would think its the coastal areas that will be most in danger.

Time to stock up on beer and pizza , oops , I mean bread and milk. :)

ours is 10.3 for plum Island... with the storm surge it will be over 12'.. been snowing hard here all day...it was supposed to tail off this morning..it never did... winds picked up too.. I'm one of the last of the people left here at work.. the rest left early to sit in traffic...

Let's see. we're getting a snowstorm.

Not a hurricane, not a tornado, not a supersell thunderstorm, but a snowstorm. We're talking fluffy snow right now with increasing amounts later tonight.

SO......with the small amount we have right now, schools have closed for both days, state workers are being sent home early (and I will bet they will be told to stay home tomorrow as well) and the rest of the real working world will have to brave the elements and risk our lives because our companies don't close at the first wisp of snow!

I know the plow drivers will definitely earn their pay tonight, but it makes me shake my head in disbelief that the schools are closed TODAY when the storm isn't really due to pick up until tonight???

I swear that our state officials are turning into (if they haven't already) the biggest wussies in the world. They make decisions that are based on fear of lawsuit more than financial responsibility and intelligence.

All I can say is bring on the storm and let's see how these wussies handle it. I'd rather rely on my neighbors and friends than the state any day of the week, mainly because I can trust them not to screw me over the first chance they get!
