Macks are gone....singing the blues.

Went out on the boat in the South/ North Rivers from 4 to 10 this morning. Original game plan was to run out and jig up some macks for live lining back in the cut. After moving further and further out, at about 5 mikes we found out why we weren't jigging any macks. They are gone cause the blues are in. They are all the way up in the south river feeding on believe it or not really big schools of monster sand eels. We attempted floundering as my buddy got 5 keepers sat. morning. Only takers were tons of crabs and 1 schoolie. We ended up picking up a few stripers including 1 keeper on herring. The blues were pesky and at one point we had a momentary blitz right in the cut. They are small, maybe 6 pounds tops. The bugs were also absolutely unbearable. Bug repellant was useless. Hopefully the bigger fish that we keep hearing about in NJ will finally wander up this way.

Same deal with the macks down to plymouth. I tried cod fishing/ hoping for live macks yesterday and the blues must of sent them running, but boy did I find a good skulpin hole.

So would it be best to stay at the front of the migration for the bigger blues or head south, Plymouth or further, for the bigger fish? I'm sick of getting skunked on stripers and need the fix that only a strong fight can provide. Tight lines!
