9ft for canal

Looking for some advice on a rod for the canal. My daughter wants to start fishing the canal this year and I finally feel she is ready. She was probably ready a year or two ago but I don think I was ready to be truthful. I use longer rods but I need to find her a 9ft rod for tossing small pencils and sp minnows. Any recommendations?

Was thinking of finding a used mojo. Thoughts?

I'll lend you a rod I used with Tyler. It's a Batson might be 9 or 9'6" but he turned some nice fish with that stick. Try it out

Yup. I bought one for my wife years ago, before we even moved back to the Cape. It can throw up to 3 oz, and it can turn a fish.

Yes it can! Someone told me once that rod wasnt a great canal rod , I just laughed about it after watching Tyler turn 20#+ fish with it on more than a few occasions. It's not a jigging type rod , but it's a perfect rod to learn "feel" and a for a kid to learn on.

it has some mojo from me also as I caught a few fish with it, mostly from the sandy beach but also at the ditch on occasion with a kid or 2 along.
I'm surprised Andy hasn't broken it yet

What Batson model correlates to the Alstar 1088 ? Would it be the Batson SW1089

Yeah right. It's a fishing pole not a magic wand! :rotf2:

Used to be the SU 1088. I haven't followed their blank line up for several years. Charlie at CMS would know.

I think fiberstar builds a 1 piece 1088 based on the allstar that is becoming popular with tarpon guys in Fla. I've not seen the blank but likely worth a look.

Soups has a 1088 fiberstar, I can grab it from him if you want to check it out.

All Star or batson su1088 for canal use. I haven't fished the fiberstar or the batson sur1088.

Got one for my nephew a few years back, a little stiff but had no trouble learning to cast. Good suggestion from numbskull.

Got an All Star 1088 for my wife a couple of years ago. Nice canal stick for a small person. She's caught several fish in the high 20's with it and it's handled them fine. She doesn't jig much, but I think it'd do fine up to 3oz at least.

WESTPORTMAFIA 03-22-2014 10:05 PM

SU and SW are 2 different animals. People get them confused especially the 1209'S.
