NCAA rifle finals was this weekend
I'm proud of my niece Sonya, a freshman member at University of Kentucky, they came in third as a team in these finals. In this article she was chosen along with 6 other teammates as All American. One of the top 15 shooters in the country.
http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/c-...tml?callback=1 She worked hard at this and I think it's pretty amazing what she accomplished in her first year at college. |
Awesome Bruce! Congrats to her.

That's quite an accomplishment. She'll only be more driven moving forward, imagine what she'll accomplish in the coming years!!
|
Awesome stuff! That is a great accomplishment.

Great Job! That was not a simple accomplishment by any stretch.

That's pretty awesome! Congrats to her

awesome
I am glad to see she is still doing well. Such a high level of commitment and dedication. All American is an outstanding acomplishment in the shooting sports. She has a great future in life, she has the right attitude.
Congrats to her!! Vic |
Wow. It is not easy to be that consistent. She must really know how to control her breathing. Was she shooting the small bore guessing .22 or air rifle catagory?
|
Yes Beamie, she shoots both small bore .22 and air rifle.
thanks guys |
Sonya competed this past weekend in Ft Benning Georgia and won first in junior air rifle and second place in overall. That qualifies her to go to Spain for world championships junior Olympic qualifier I think. Yes she will be representing the US.

Nice write up

She is over in Spain now
out of 81 best in the world shooters, she placed 21st on her first day of qualifiers. http://www.ukathletics.com/sports/c-...091514aaa.html she shoots again Thursday I think. here is another article on the event http://www.theoutdoorwire.com/story/...79950u94hthpyw link to scores, but I can't figure it out http://www.issf-sports.org/competiti...hx?cshipid=930 |
Good Luck to her Bruce
|
thanks Chris

She shot again today
US Jr Women's 3 Position small bore Rifle Results:, she came in 14th with a 576! I think that was at 20 meters. I'd say that is pretty good competing in the world championships overseas in another country. If you are not familiar with the scoring, that is 60 shots and to get a 10 on a shot you have to hit a dot smaller than the head of a pin. Scoring is done electronically so it's very accurate. She is headed back home to school at UK. |
Great for her, that's a good showing on the big stage. Valuable experience for her next visit there.

Valuable experience for sure Andy.
I guess after the first 2 positions, prone and kneeling she was in line for a medal but after standing she slipped down to 14th. But she was the high score of the 3 American women. I am simply amazed by how well she has been doing, I'm sure she will continue over achieving. http://www.usashooting.org/news/2014...enultimate-day |
Bruce, great showing in a very competitive and challenging sport!!!!

Nice article. She has a black belt as well!! That in itself is an accomplishment. My son is a martial arts instructor. I believe the % of people who make that rank that start martial arts training is around 5%. She is an impressive young woman!!!! You and her family should be proud of her.

thanks guys
yes we are proud of her I think it took that website 1 year to post that |
Quick update, Sonya is a Junior at Kentucky now finishing up her degree then on to a masters. Here is an article on her recent trip to Ft. Benning for Olympic qualifier. Her brother got to see this live as he now is stationed in Georgia so that is cool. As a junior shooter she tried out for the Junior Olympics, this time it was for the last spot going to Brazil this summer.
http://www.ukathletics.com/news/uk-r...ics-04-11-2016 12th place not bad for what she has gone thru the past 2 years healthwise. |
That's awesome.
