In Memory of Crafty Angler

One year ago yesterday we lost Crafty (Chuck Vietry) Angler. Here is a photo of how I like to remember him. I found it appropriate that his neck light is on in the photo as his light was always on in life.

His favorite recepie:
"Drunkin Blackfish Stew”

quarter cup butter
one medium onion diced
two medium potatoes diced
half cup celery sliced and diced
two cans cream of potato soup
two or three cups fresh homemade fish stock (or clam juice)
couple of dashes of Worcestershire
salt and pepper to taste
one to two pounds of fish (blackfish) - if you use clam juice add some other fish that will flake like flounder or sea bass
one teaspoon salt
one half teaspoon pepper
Vermouth

Sauté onions in butter. Add potatoes, celery and fish stock or clam juice and cook until potatoes are al dente before adding potato soup. Add fish when broth is boiling. Salt and pepper to taste. Add vermouth (not to taste, you don’t want to overwhelm) but up to a quarter cup… but add slowly until you know something is there but you're not sure what. Try to make sure that there's plenty of fish and potatoes. I've added mashed anchovy but, like the vermouth, just enough to know it’s there.

Nicely done, Dennis . . . a fitting tribute on the anniversary of Crafty's demise.

Great post.

I often find my self thinking about chuck and the few times that we went out and fished together. He was to me like the crazy uncle i always wished i had.. eager to teach, to laugh and most importantly, to enjoy life.

Im going to be harvesting a lot of blackfish this year and will definitely make a few batches of Chuck's chowder. I might even give the ol coot's 'troutaug' rig a try....

Crafty and Slow Eddie.. I miss them a lot. :(

I have a "Crafty" framed Tog picture that my family gave me and I will always think of him often when I look at it.

It's a good one. I used to crash the Newport fishing club meetings just to get a cup. Habs loved it too

He was one of those guys on the board who when he posted you were genuinely interested in what he had to say

Great guy all around, always upbeat (even when things weren't going well for him), always approachable...very sincere person.

This world could definitely use a few more Craftys. :(

Miss ya buddy...

I've never made a dish with bottled clam juice...is it any good?

Usually I'll just make liquid from some wine and open the clams in it if I wanted some stock, but that doesn't make for a lot of volume.

Perhaps will do a variation on the Crafty recipe this year...just need someone to catch me a fish.
