Tricks of the trade
 

I've been surfcasting around the Cape for several years (limited luck due to limited time) I hear stories of guys catching lots of stripers on fly rods. How should one go about doing this? I will have time this summer to learn the craft ( I do freshwater fly fishing so casting isn't the skill I need) and would appreciate some helpful (as well as sarcastic) advice.

Match the hatch, clousers, sandeels, peanut bunker.... Tie flies similar to these to start. Find estuaries, bolder fields, flats... areas that you know hold fish. I started with intermediate line, you can cast poppers and other flies.

Casting (IMO) fresh and salt are two different beasts. I can fish in a river pretty darn well, but when you couple the action of the surf and the high wind you encounter when fishing the salt... It's a learning curve for sure!

Find a dock that has big lights on it during summer nights and try heavily weighted white flies. :drevil:

Buy Stripers and Streamers by Ray Bondorew. It is as simple as you make it.

Thanks for the pointers, now to wet a line (drown a fly) and see if I can put your advice to good practice.

Try the beaches and estuaries in Sandwich. Sunrise and Sunset seem to work best for me. Air Flo Cold Saltwater intermediate line is the line of choice for most who fish the area.
