Has anyone been actively fishing Deep Hole in Matunuck lately? I am planning on giving it a go this afternoon after work. I've never fished there before, but have read enough to know NOT to venture off on the rocks at low tide. Would casting from the little beach area still produce?

Regardless of where you go.... it's only a night game this time of year

That's definitely what it seems like now. Early mornings also.

For many years I was a member of the Narragansett Saltwater Fishing Club. Our club house is right at Deep Hole so it was a go to spot for all the guys all season. I probably fished the hole 1000 time.
You want to get out of the rock/rubble bar as far as you can to hit the Hole. This requires fishing it at low tide. If you fish on the beach at high tide you will be casting into 2 feet of water. On a moon low you can get out over 150 yards from shore. Use poppers or needlefish as swimmers will just roll in the surf. Cast across the waves toward the Point Jude Light way in the distance. The fish will hit between the waves. Oh yeah, wear Korkers as wading the bar is like walking on slimy bowling balls.

There! You now have all the secrets, (almost) to fishing The Hole.:uhuh:

AND DO NOT fish there by yourself until you know the place - and even that is debateable

if you're fishing spots like that, you might want to consider a 5ml wet suit. If you get swept off, it's like a life jacket, as long as you're not loaded down with too much gear.

The wetsuit sounds like a smart idea. I was thinking that a PFD of some sort would be a good idea.

I fish the area often def sketchy without a buddy

LOL You could take pics of fish every cast but if it's not on a cell phone,text or on the spot fish pics you'll still be alone. too much work for most an the more work it will take thw fewer you'll see out there. It was the same back in the late 80's. I never see any one out there. catchin fish but it takes work.

Piemma described it well. I'm a member of the same Naragansett club and fish it often. Keep in mind, the area surrounding Deep Hole has become a favorite place for surfers, so you may see the parking lot full of cars.

YOu may be better driving an additional 15 minutes and fishing around Point Judith as you will have more choices.

Thank you. I have been hitting the areas around Gansett for the most part. I am pretty content with those areas for now. Not going to try Deep Hole until I have the right gear and some more experience under my belt.

What do you want Mike? If you don't help the kids there's no use doing what we do.

You could help by sending a pm to the op since he was the person that asked the question even though your answer was informative as always.

I'm sorry if I unintentionally spilled about a certain spot. I was under the impression that it was a very well known fishing area. Point taken about keeping spots secret. It will not happen again. I appreciate being told that I am out of line with this forum's etiquette.

BTW, to the complainers, I didn't realize that Deep Hole was a "secret spot". I've only fished it for 45 years.

did you guys know that deep hole got its name because of the lady who lived across the street from the ocean mist?

I dont get how this is even an issue. Deep hole is NOT a secret spot. The kid was going there anyway and without this thread could have gotten in trouble. And hey maybe with a tip from Piemma he may even hook up. WTH no one else is.

Mine was just a blanket statement about the importance of tight lips for not so well known spots, mainly to help a new member avoid the type of thumping I've seen others take for too much info.

I think my first post was something like "hey, the east end is on fire! I killed it with makrel pattern pencils at the turn in front of pole 950.!":smash:

I've heard Deep hole mentioned before but know nothing about it.

This time of year, i would be focusing on the deepest water accessible from shore with the most moving water, be it white water or currents. better if you have both. think of big jetties and rocky ledges that are hazardous and require studded wader shoes or corkers. I'd Fish off the bottom with sinking needles, rubber shads or eels. Id fish this method until september when things start to cool and the fish start moving south again... Deep hole to me is a early to late spring and fall to late fall spot. ( just my opinion)

I actually caught a surfer once, not at deep hole, but at PJ. Two surfers waked out to where I was out on the point standing on a rock and put in right behind me, then paddled out into my line (I had already cast)
I was a good boy and didn't set up, but it was morning and quitting time anyways.

No need to apologize and don't feel bad at all. People here are glad to help you out. There is "absolutely" nothing secret being shared here, so don't even worry and go have some fun. If you are fishing casual, in addition to Point Judith, you can try Camp Cronin/East Wall which is nearby. If you have bottom gear, you may have a ball catching scup and other bottom species. Of course, bring a popper and a metal casting lure just in case the bluefish show up.

Camp Cronin is working out great for me getting practice with the bucktail. Although the paint on my andrus jetty caster is already coming off from the rocks.
