Costa vs Maui Jim
 

I consider my sunglasses just important to some fo the gear on my boat. I recently came home to my dog eating my Costa Blackfins. I had the amber mirror 580P lenses and loved them. Good in low light and bluebird days. Lot of guys swear by the Mauis though. Any experience with both? caomparisons? need to get another pair quick. Cant stan my oakleys on the water.

I think that is so over-looked by many.
It's amazing what you can see with a quality pair of shades compared to what you can't.

The other day I could clearly see the bait-balls of anchovies just beneath the surface....almost predicting the explosions at times...it really helps to know where to place your offering.

I don't own either, so I can't compare the 2 you mentioned,...I have a couple of pairs of BlooBlockers that have done me well....when those expire, I will look into the next best thing. Got a big head and needed a wide frame....I think there was another thread not that long ago referencing styles and models....it even included glasses for big-heads like mine...

I have and like both. Although I feel that Costa quality and customer service have slipped in recent years. No specific issues. It just seems as though the frames in particular on the Costa's do not stand up as well as they once did.
I also might give a slight edge to Maui Jim's for the quality of their lens polarization.

I own 9 pairs of Maui's and 4 pairs of Costas

Maui's have better lenses in my opinion

they also come in different shades...grey rose and amber

customer service cannot be beat and if you talk to customer service...tell they the boat you have and they'll be happy to send you out a SWEEEET 2ft sticker with the bird for the boat


Costas are heavier and cause more fatigue to the facial area...optics are good but not in the same league as Maui's...again this is my opinion..


I used to wear Costas exclusively until there was an issue with a lens delaminating in the first 30 days....they would not cover it...they lost me as a customer

I find that that to be the complete opposite my maui's are heavy hurt my nose the lens is way to dark..
I prefer Costa Green mirror Glass 580's and i always keep 2 pair of 5 dollar polarized throw aways on the boat.

I get my costas on flea bay new and cheaper than retail my 2 cents

Good stuff Jim. I was trying on the mauis at the boat show and the bronze HD lens is insane. I've been a costa guy but thinking I might switch.

a lot cheaper when you work with ophthalmologists/optometrists for 14 years

depends on which ones you are getting....glass lenses obviously a lot heavier...thicker metal frames heavier than polycarb frames..correct fit supersedes them all

I also find my 'Maui Jim's to be heavier,but I wear them on bluebird days for the lens.
My Costas are definitely my everyday sunglasses,very comfortable.

I have a serious issue with buying sungalsses.

I have 4 pairs of each. well, actually, 6 pairs of costa & 4 MJ.

I have noticed frame quality slipping on the Costas. Also the Costa glass lenses seem to be a tad more fragile. It seems like a crap shoot when you send them in for fixing. sometimes you get charged for lenses, sometimes not. anything to fix on the frame is typically free.

The MJ have been very consistent, quality & service.

I can't really pick a favorite, each has its own place. The various lenses on the Costa are awesome for various conditions. I think that frame weight has a lot to do with which frame you have. I have another pair of MJs on order, so I really can't say I have a bias either way.

have both. mauis for styling and costas for fishing.

every time the wife went out and bought a purse I bought a pair of sunglasses...but I got mine at cost...which in sunglasses is less than half of retail

there is some truth here. I definitely find myself always choosing the Costas for fishing...

I fish at night mostly. But, starting to do more early morning fishing. Good thread!

I stay with the Maui. There lenses are the best I have prescription bifocals that are unreal. After 4 years I sent them back and they installed regular lenses in the frame for $60. My frame was so beat they even replaced it for free.
So now I have 2 pairs.

Don't forget Smith. Lenses are right up there with MJ and Costa, and better IMO for certain applications.

Smith polarchromic for inshore, Costa 580 blue mirror for offshore.

Costa's were my favorites. My current sunglasses are Kaenon's. I don't even wear my costas anymore unless I don't have my Kaenon's. That is saying a lot.

Now if only i can wear my sunglasses and see my chartplotter at the same time wed be in business.

You Maui guys. What's your favorite all aroubd lens for sunny and low light days?

As a member of the large squash society I find the Costa Hammerheads (go figure) are the ones that fit best.

I have the Hammerheads with the Poly lenses and they are on my head almost all the time when out of the house.

I have and used Costas, Ocean Waves, Revos and a few others ... Ocean Waves have been my favorite, although my prescriptions for my lenses have changed ... have to update them all ... but would definitely go with the MJs ...

...the polarized lenses protect you from the UV rays as well as other things..Polarized lenses contain a special filter that block intensely reflected light, reducing glare.
Mirrored lenses just reflect the light away but don't provide much protection.
They do however, make mirrored-polarized lenses which do both, plus the added feature of not letting the women on the beach know you're looking at them....especially when they're adjusting their straps...:heybaby:
