Anyone remember Gil's Custom Tackle ?

He had a shop in Wakefield, RI in the 1990s.. where CVS is now. I am going to look at a 10' one piece spinning rod he built and I'm wondering what blanks he liked to build on. I know it's a long shot, and that he did build to order, but I thought it might help me ID the blank. Thanks in advance for any input.

I remember Gil's...can't help with the blank info. He is still around south county. Not sure of his last name.

I figured you would. I did have a 7.5' spinning rod he built on a Lami blank. Anyway, I'm going to take a look at the rod and hope it's a blank I like. As I remember, the rod I had was nicely crafted. This one was built in the 1990s.. hoping it's a GSB. We shall see.. I'll stop by and say hello next week. Thanks.

Gil Pope built my first custom rod in the late 80's, it was a 10 ft St Croix 2pc but I requested the blank. I'm sure he built on Lamis etc. He is still around, had been playing open mike at Tara's but not sure of the last time I saw him. His first shop was at the old Wakefield Sports and Arms, where Purple Cow is now.

His was one of the few shops you could order a lami GSB blank when they first came out. My friend Bob Andrade who built rods for all the top hooks told me to order a 1321M blank through Gil. I went down to order a blank and Pope wouldn't order the blank for me unless I let him build it. I walked out and went through a Connecticut connection for the blank. Never went back to his shop after that fiasco. Ten footer could be a 1201L - great blank.

That's what I thought and what I'm hoping.. 1M or 1L would be fine. We shall see when he brings the rod to me.

I used to go in to Gil's all the time as a kid, i think my mom would be getting her hair done in that little plaza. I would always drop any money i could scrape up in there as a kid... good memories. baskin robins, critter hut, there was some 50s diner for a short period...

I have a 10' Sabre cut down 6" built by Gil almost 20 years ago.

Lami, Sabre, St Coix, I think Loomis too?

Hmmm... I go there on occasion. It's a nice rod, well put together ... 10'. Pretty sure it's an L, but have to play with it and compare it to the M I have. Glad to get it... and it was very reasonably priced.
