Basswood

Does basswood need to be sealed, or is it just prime and paint like cedar?

capesams 07-10-2003 03:58 PM

sealed

ferret 07-10-2003 04:00 PM

That was quick!!! I noticed that Jann's sells basswood blocks dirt cheap. Since I'm always whackin em against the rocks basswood probably aint for me.

Glad to see someone finally talking, I've been checking for posts in the plug building forum all week and no ones saying much. Is everyone out fishing?

UserRemoved1 07-10-2003 04:07 PM

gotta seal but beware it's a VERY soft wood for plugs....turns great though.

capesams 07-10-2003 04:49 PM

basswoodI

I have a Fender bass made of basswood. It has a hard finish and has no big scratches or toothmarks after years of gigging. Try putting on a bunch of coats of something tough like poly. basswood is very light, if you don't use weight in them they'll cast like rapalas. see you on the beach... longshot

What better wood could someone choose to use to catch a bass with afterall? :)

I have no time now to build plugs.

Striperknight 07-10-2003 09:27 PM

Ferret - theres a guy in NJ who makes basswood plugs and
people pay top dollar for them. Can't be all that bad using it.

For the plug builder,Basswood has many desirable properties, but it must be sealed prior to painting.

don't dought it a bit dave,,,,this new generation of fisher people just doesn't know when to keep their mouths shut. if it wasn't for the internet they couldn't catch a fish barrel. or have a clue even where to start looking,,, I'm all for telling how to, whats good for rods, bait, plugs etc. .........but shootin their mouths off as to where is another thing,,,it'll come back to bite them in the a$$ when they find a honey hole all to them selves an they go the next nite or so only to find it elbow to elbow cause some one aired it on the internet.....ahhh! what's the point. all the damage has been done..........WHAT other BOARD are you speaking of?
