Thread for Jigs and Tails
Hi Guys,
Whats the right thread to use for tying bucktails either on jig heads or tail hooks? Thanks |
Good morning, I've been using size A rod thread for a filler on some of the jigs so the hair lays good and Danvilles flat waxed nylon as it lays nice,is easy to work with and it flattens out on the tie so as it hold the hairs where you want them. i used to commercially tie saltwater flies till Umpqua took over the market LOL. I use Duro super glue instead of head cement as it holds better and theres much less waste with the small tubes compared to Zap a Gap. The bottom of the bottle always hardens up before I get to it no matter how much I tie . Hope this helps . Ron

Use the cheapest clear nail polish you can find for your heads.

I just use regular nylon thread, size A or D depending on what your tying. I usually seal with quick dry clear nail polish. Avoid the NCP nylon for jig tying, it is weaker and sux when it snaps while tying a bucktail.

Flap tail once told me to use dental floss. It's so wide it does a great job capturing the buck tail and holding it to the jig. I use 5 minute clear epoxy to seal it all into a rock hard surface. red sharpie markers work well to give the red gill look.

Luv the flat wax for tails siwash and trebles. Hard as nails after and next day 1/2hour epoxy applied over threads and spun. Luv the look and wear. 5 min epoxy I find yellows too fast and is too brittle. JMO.

GSP 200 denier is by far the best. A little pricy but well worth it.

BTW I was talking about tails for plugs not lead heads. fatcow is a jigger so he would know better than I.

James you underwrap the hook before placing the threads on the shank, right?

Yes, same way I used to tye trout fies, and have been doing a few half hitches to finish it.

My fave has been Uni bigfly. Comes in white, black, purple, pink, red, and a couple others.

Does GSP have any stretch, or is it like kevlar thread?
