To all who share an interest in eLoran
To all who share an interest in eLoran -- please forward to friends and colleagues:
Public comment is requested regarding implementation of eLoran in the U.S. in a Federal Register notice placed on March 22, 2015. You may remember that implementation was adopted as a goal of the International Loran Association some years ago, and that many positive comments were received when this proposal was first announced in the Federal Register in 2009. For a variety of reasons, deployment of eLoran was not pursued at that time. Reconsideration of the importance of complementary positioning, navigation and timing for critical infrastructure protection has led to this new request for public comment on eLoran potential implementation. Please provide your comment on this significant announcement! Abstract: "The purpose of this notice is to seek comment from the public and industry regarding potential plans by the United States Government to implement an enhanced Long Range Navigation (eLoran) system as a complementary positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) capability to the Global Positioning System (GPS). The positioning, navigation, and timing performance of eLoran will vary widely depending on the number of transmitters and monitor sites for corrections that are implemented.br> Provide a comment on or before May 22, 2015, by visiting one of these links: https://www.federalregister.gov/arti...ublic-comments http://rntfnd.org/2015/03/22/us-anno...ublic-comment/ |

What's the logic with bringing back loran? Is this a doomsday scenario that we might loose GPS?

There is currently NO global back-up system to GPS. There is currently NO universal US back-up system. What would happen if the next solar flare disrupted service from our satellites? What if anti-US or terrorist groups jammed our satellites? Without a viable non-GPS based back-up system, the US is at a great security risk. It would cost billions, perhaps trillions of dollars if our GPS signal was taken out? Charts and a compass i would hope most bigger ships would still be using both . even in the Military we train map 1st then GPS even now modern Mortars use a computer but all use a plotting board as a back up (old School ) if stuff decides not to work . I see this a fear based marketing ploy |
I still have my 800X sitting in the garage.

Hard to imagine getting around without gps. Back when I left freshwater tournament bass fishing behind and started launching in Scituate with my old Basstracker Tournament V-17 I I had an old Interphase depth. I'd navigate and fish a milk run of ledges from the harbor mouth to outside Cohasset harbor on compass headings and nautical mile log.
There were countless scary runs in the fog in low light, carefully watching the nautical mile log and on getting close to Cohen's Ledge (my first stop), shutting down the outboard so I could listen for the waves on the ledge and moving in by ideal when I got close. GPS certainly is easier, but I'd have the confidence to use the compass and mile log if needed. |
