FORMULA FOR SURF LEADER

I need a formula for a surf striper fly leader for an intermediate leader. Thanks for your help. Charlie

If you prefer a long leader. 4' of 40, 2-3' of 25, 2' of 15. Shock tippet if you want. If you're just fishing stripers you can go with just 2 feet of 25.

If you're surf fishing it's unlikely you'll favor a long leader. When punching flies into the wind you'll want a shorter leader to turn the fly over, especially if the flies have any bulk to them. A three foot butt section of 30 to 50 pound test tipped with 2 to 3 feet of 10 to 20 will do the trick. If using something over six feet I'd go with three sections, for instance 2' #40, 2' #30, 2' #20. Keep in mind the heavy test is for power to turn the fly over. Visibility is seldom an issue in the surf, plus you'll want some abrasion resistance.
