Commercial black sea bass and scup
I know there is a lot of commercial fishing both sea bass and scup but i have only seen scup for sale a couple of times. Where are these fish sold? It it mostly exported out of state/country or am i just missing it? Also is it labeled as something else when it hits the stores? I bought scup one time to chunk with since i didnt have time to catch bait. It was actually right next to fresh butterfish at a shop in Worcester.

I've seen it for sale in several Portuguese fish markets.

MM is right ,most Portuguese markets have Scup .
But WTF does the rest go .. I think the limit is 10000 # a week & jumps to 15K & 20 K at times / & that,s per commercial fishing license  |
Isn't scup called Silver perch now?

I know the Chinese are very much into both BSB and scup. I do several charters a year with immigrants from Hong Kong who love to fill their coolers with scup.

You would be surprised at how many restaurants offer whole fried scup as entrees. (varying ethnicity too)
Delicious deep fried with plantain chips, a few shots of Aguardiente and a couple beers. In Rhode Island bsb are a mythological creature, with a crap limit of 1. In Bassachusetts they're monstrous and theres a decent limit on them! |
Skin um, bread um, pan fry um,,,, several times a season around here.
Jonserfish where u been? |
I'm just pissed the rec season in mass is opening a week late. I had to cancel 2 sea bass trips because I didn't realize the delay.
On the plus side, it will be cranking on opening day. Posted from my iPhone/Mobile device |

Front page of todays PRO-JO is a article about J/W kids in a competation to come up with SCUP dishes .
one of the bigger problems is the size & the time & effort it takes to scale them ..they sent them to some large companies that make automatic scalers & they found one that is being used for salmon that worked . they also were trying to come up with a more appealing name :claps: |
I've seen 'em for sale at the Chinese stores on Washington Street in Boston a few times, usually for around $2 a pound. I've picked them up a few times, usually pretty decent eating, even when frozen.
