Don't use your teeth....
To help cinch up your knots...... I was rigging up a new rod for my nephew yesterday and used my teeth to cinch up a palomar on the leader. Chipped and cracked front tooth. Was in the dentist's chair this afternoon getting it bonded.....

Broken teeth or cut fingers.. I do both.

LOL Guilty. they're my 3rd hand

I'm ok with cut hands. Broken teeth?? All set.

I don't used my teeth on knots at all anymore.
Plus I have found I get a better pull using my pliers |
Lower front teeth I guess. Left side looking forward. Opposite if you are a south paw. The bond won't hold long if you keep biting. Harder habit to break than smoking.

Leave a long tag end and let your first fish tighten your knot for you.

Not enough left to risk em on knots.

i tie a clove hitch against my palomar knot
which makes the tag end stick out at 90 degrees from the main line so its easier to nip it off and not cut the wrong one |
Ross ... right there with you ... used to bite mono all the time until the front of one of my teeth chipped and a big chunk came off ... had to get it bonded too ... this was over 15 years ago ... at first I moved to my molars but quickly decided to use pliers, snippers, scissors or whatevers would handle it better than my teeth

Good post.
Dentist recently told me I had a few minor chips and uneven edges on my teeth and asked me how that might have happened ? I'll change my techniques after reading this post. |
Years ago I finally learned my lesson after three trips to the dentist for rebuilds.

I agree with Mikey, harder than smoking to quit !! That stuff they put on there is really holding well though.....
|
I Have had an overbite since i was a kid i am lucky to be able to cut a carrot in half with my teeth LOL mono not a chance !!
|
Ugh...I have nice teeth and have been using them for 40 years on knots.
I agree, pliers are likely the way to go. I also agree that it is WAAAAY harder than quitting smoking. |
My mentor used his teeth to cut line. When I asked him how he did that without needing pliers he told me his technique and quickly followed with, "never try it because I have a chipped tooth to prove it."
One of his kids didn't get the message about using your teeth to cut things that aren't food and almost popped a vertebra in his neck out of place. To this day my godfather apparently still cuts with his teeth and tells everyone to not do what he does... |
Ross,
Never heard of this "costly" fishing injury! Thanks for the tip! |
Happened to me a few years ago. Not a cheap fix either
